Lavelle Stanley indicted in South Side homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury today indicted a man for a Nov. 15 shooting death on the South Side.

Lavelle Stanley, 24, of East Judson Avenue, was indicted on a direct presentment on charges of aggravated murder, attempted murder, felonious assault with firearm specifications and being a felon in illegal possession of a firearm.

Stanley is charged with killing 25-year-old Elliot Stewart of Youngstown and the wounding of his brother, 26-year-old Derrick Stewart about 5:20 p.m. Nov. 15 at a Southern Boulevard business they operated.

Reports said the two were shot after Elliot Stewart intervened in an argument between two women, and a man was upset he got involved.

Elliot Stewart and the man, who police say is Stanley, seemed to have their differences ironed out before the brothers were shot.

Police issued a warrant for Stanley’s arrest Sunday but they have not been able to find him.

Records from Mahoning County Common Pleas Court show Stanley pleaded guilty to a charge of being a felon in illegal possession of a firearm in 2009 and was sentenced to a year in prison.
