Campbell man charged with driving with suspended license
CAMPBELL — Police arrested a 55-year-old Third Street man for having open containers in his car and for driving with a suspended license.
Shortly after midnight Tuesday, police pulled over James Steven Smith when his SUV failed to stop at the intersection of Jackson Street and Wilson Avenue.
When an officer approached the SUV, he immediately noticed four mostly empty open cans of beer on the back seat floor and one mostly full can of beer on the passenger's seat. He could also smell the odor of alcohol coming from inside the SUV.
Smith could not provide his driver's license, registration or proof of insurance, and police soon discovered that Smith's license had been suspended. He was placed under arrest.
The officer then searched Smith for weapons, and found an open bottle of alcohol in his front jacket pocket.
Smith is charged for having open containers, failing to stop at a stop sign, and driving under suspension.
