The Girard Health Department’s well-child immunization clinic is Wednesday at 100 W. Main St. Call 330-545-6048 for times and appointment. A $10 fee will be charged per child.

Parents are reminded to bring a copy of their child’s immunization record, and that a parent or guardian must accompany children under 18. Parents must pre-register children prior to the clinic.

Free program on knee surgery

HERMITAGE, PA.

A free program about total- and partial-knee surgery is offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 11 at the UPMC Horizon Womancare Center, 875 N. Hermitage Road, at which Dr. Edward Uberti, D.O., orthopedic surgeon, will discuss indications for total- and partial-knee surgery, remedies, and physical therapy.

New MRI machine

Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will receive delivery today of a MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T MRI. The total cost of the project is about $2 million.

A crane will be used to pick up the 10,000 pound magnet from a truck and lower it into a 900 square foot modular building, specially built for the MRI, and connected to existing renovated hospital space.

Made by Siemens Healthcare, the new MRI scanner will expand access to diagnostic imaging that supports a complete range of clinical applications. It features technology that provides a faster and more efficient MRI exam, and has an open bore design, which helps reduce the closed-in feeling of traditional MRIs, said Michael Rubin, chairman of the department of radiology at Akron Children’s Hospital.

New breast-cancer therapy experiment

Breast-cancer researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital & Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) are testing an experimental, two-drug medical therapy for advanced triple negative breast cancers.

Researchers plan to enroll about 40 patients in this National Cancer Institute-sponsored Phase 2 study nationwide. Patients with metastatic triple negative breast cancer may qualify for this study. For information, call The James Line at 1-800-293-5066.

Triple-negative breast cancers represent 15-20 percent of the more than 211,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer annually in the United States. These breast cancers are often more aggressive, occur in younger women and have limited treatment options.

Additional sites under consideration to open the study include the Cleveland Clinic, Georgetown, Moffitt, Roswell Park, University Hospitals/Case Western, University of North Carolina, Vanderbilt and Virginia Commonwealth.
