Police find weapons while answering call

YOUNGSTOWN

Police found a 9 mm handgun and a knife on a woman early Sunday while answering a domestic-violence call on the North Side.

Officers were called to the 2200 block of Ohio Avenue about 4 a.m. for a report of a woman, later identified as Nicole Hester, 18, who was holding a knife to the throat of her mother and chasing people inside the house with the knife, before running outside and firing several shots into the air.

Officers searched for her after they arrived because she was gone, and an officer found her at Covington and Belmont avenues, reports said. Hester was arrested on a charge of domestic violence and a weapons charge and taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Executive session

Township trustees will have an executive session at 5 p.m. today to discuss police contracts, at the Brookfield Township Administration building, 6844 Strimbu Drive.

Giveaways and games at Barnes & Noble

On Friday, Barnes & Noble, 381 Boardman-Poland Road, will kick off the holiday season with Discovery Friday, a day of games, giveaways and events.

Discovery Friday will include a model from the Kennedy assassination displayed by students from the Youngstown Early College; a book-signing by Dr. Donna DeBlasio of her latest book, “Images of America: Youngstown;” a signing with local author John Sprankle; story times at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; the annual Elf on the Shelf adoption event and various stations for games, writing activities, LEGO contests and more.

Additionally, representatives from Making Kids Count will be on hand with children’s crafts.

Customers also will have a chance to enter for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree.

Hunger Banquet set

The Mahoning Valley Continuum of Care’s Hunger Banquet will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave.

The free event is open to the public and will dramatize the unequal distribution of food in the world. Guests will randomly draw a colored ticket that will assign them to one of three socioeconomic levels that represent proportional global standards of living in American society.

A former homeless man who has become pastor of a Mahoning Valley church will speak on the subject “From Homelessness to Holiness.”

Ribbon-cutting at dementia-care unit

A ribbon-cutting will mark the opening of Reflections, the new dementia-care unit at Vista Care Centers, at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The new unit is at Victoria House, 5295 Ashley Circle. Vista Care Center administrators, professionals and caregivers, Austintown Township trustees and Mahoning County commissioners will attend.

Scam warning

NILES

Police are warning city residents to be on guard against scam phone calls that have been going to residents the past few days telling them they are behind on their utility payments and asking for personal information.

The Niles Utility Department has not been making the calls, and residents are urged to report the information to police at 330-652-9944 and the utility department at 330-544-9000, especially if they are able to obtain any information on the caller, such as a phone number, city Police Chief Rob Hinton said.
