R&B oldies format returns to AM radio WHTX-1570

The R&B oldies format is back at radio station WHTX-AM 1570.

The format was changed in May to adult standards by a potential buyer of the station, which was owned by Christopher Lash. A dispute arose over who will get to buy the station that also involved original buyer Sagittarius Communications.

The dispute was settled a few weeks ago. Sagittarius now owns the station and resumed the R&B format, said Greg Andrews, acting general manager of WHTX, which plays songs from the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s.

Andrews has worked in radio and television broadcasting in the Mahoning Valley for 40 years, including a stint as a DJ on the former JAMZ-102. He is joined by Phil Cato, program director, and W.T. McCaskill, computer specialist, at WHTX.

The station is on the air 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with 500 watts of power between dawn and dusk, and 116 watts at night.

Sagittarius has also purchased WHTX sister station WYCL-AM 1540 from Lash. WYCL is off the air now but will return in the near future with a Hispanic music format, said Andrews.

Sagittarius is owned by Nelson Cintron of Cleveland.
