Youngstown brother, 25, slain outside shop on South Side

YOUNGSTOWN

Elliott Stewart, 25, of Maywood Drive on the city's South Side was shot to death at 5:30 p.m. Friday outside his family’s detailing shop, Breeze Car Waxing, 3628 Southern Blvd.

His brother, Elliott Stewart, 26, of Clearmont Drive, also was shot in the hip and is in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown police said. It appeared he was shot once.

The shootings stemmed from an argument at the shop during which the Stewart brothers “asked [people] to leave, someone took offense, words were exchanged and shots were fired,” said Detective Sgt. Ron Rodway.

The Stewarts went to St. Elizabeth Health Center in a private vehicle, and police arrived at the shooting scene a short time later.

Police have a person of interest in the case, but no arrest had been made as of Friday night.

A Youngstown police report says the suspect is a short, light-skinned black male who arrived in a burgundy and gold Suburban. After firing at the Stewart brothers, he drove north on Southern Boulevard, still shooting.

Before the shooting, Derrick Stewart said, he heard a commotion outside the shop, saw two females arguing and told them to leave.

The suspect was across Southern Boulevard at the time, and Derrick told him to leave also, which made the suspect angry and caused him to reach toward his side as if he had a gun, police said.

Derrick Stewart said he and the suspect talked it out, and the suspect got back into his car and began to pull away.

At about that time, Elliott Stewart pulled up in his car, and the suspect started shooting at both Stewarts, with Elliott Stewart being hit in the chest.

Breeze Car Waxing is at the intersection of Southern Boulevard and East Judson Avenue on the South Side, a couple of blocks north of the Boardman line.

The mother of Elliott and Derrick Stewart owns the shop, police said.

The homicide is the 16th of the year in Youngstown. There were 24 at this point in 2012.
