Union Elementary students and staff received a tasty, but chilly treat on Oct. 11.

The PTO sponsored a Kona Ice visit, in which students could pick from a variety of flavors including orange sunshine, pi ±a colada, very cherry, strawberry and wild watermelon, among other flavors.

Second-grade students raved about their Kona Ice.

“They have really good flavors,” said Mary Brant. “My favorite is tiger’s blood.”

Kona Ice is a national franchise that serves schools nationwide. Tim Oswald, owner of the Youngstown Kona Ice, is in his fourth year.

“We’re a different attraction than the normal ice cream guy, we bring more fun,” said Oswald.

Kona Ice is low cost option to treat the children or can be used to raise funds.

“We come to football games or open houses and 25 percent of the proceeds go back to the school,” said Oswald. “It doesn’t cost the school and it’s a product that kids and adults alike enjoy.”
