The Poland Schools Foundation had its annual banquet Oct. 15 at The Lake Club.

The banquet honored two alumni and an outstanding educator. Receiving the outstanding educator award was recent retiree Ruth Metzger. Metzger was a first-grade teacher for 27 years in the Poland School District, 26 of which were spent at North Elementary.

“Parents, teachers and children just adore her,” said Holly Fender, secretary of the Poland Schools Foundation.

Two people received the alumni award: Russell Batty Jr., Poland Village police chief, and Brian Goodin, Poland Township police chief.

Ted Roberts, president of the Poland Schools Foundation, said it was a unique situation that both police chiefs were awarded.

“We wanted to honor their dedication to staying with the community,” said Roberts. “They have provided oustanding assistance to teachers, administrators and students while schools across the country have a difficult time with school safety.”

Fender echoed Roberts sentiments.

“They have done such a good job coordinating with the schools,” said Fender. “They have worked hand-in-hand with the school system to make our schools safe.”

The Poland Schools Foundation is an academic booster organization. They work to raise money from donations in the community so they can make donations to the schools and teachers.

“We assist getting materials and equipment where the school budget has not been able to provide those things,” said Roberts.
