Trumbull Correctional Institute has been rated one of the safest, cleanest and best managed security facilities in Ohio by the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee.
The CIIC is an Ohio legislative committee that inspects correctional facilities to ensure they are safe and humane, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said.
The committee recently published inspection results for its unannounced three-day visit in October, giving TCI an “exceptional” rating for fiscal accountability and accolades for violence reduction compared to the previous year.
Inmate fights decreased 22 percent, inmate-on-inmate assaults dropped by 42 percent and assaults on staff dropped by 83 percent.
Drug use by inmates also dropped “significantly,” the report said. Staffing received an exceptional designation for reducing overtime by 19.4 percent. The total was significantly lower than the state average.
“Overall, CIIC’s finding is that TCI manages a difficult and challenging population but does so in a safe, humane, and even rehabilitative environment,” the report said.
“The successful CIIC inspection is a reflection of the hardworking, dedicated employees, community partnerships and strong volunteer base here,” said Warden Christopher LaRose. “Every step we take in the right direction contributes to offender success, which will benefit our neighborhoods upon the offender’s release.”
LaRose has been warden for one year.
TCI houses 1,534 level one (minimum security) and level three (close security) offenders. Built in 1992, the prison employs 348 corrections officers and staff.
