METRO DIGEST || Amendola wins Super Bowl tickets

Super Bowl winner

POLAND

A Lowellville man is the winner of two tickets to the Super Bowl in the United Way of the Mahoning Valley’s Tuesday drawing.

Nick Amendola, who is sales manager at Greenwood Chevrolet, can choose between the football tickets, which also includes airfare for two to New York City and four nights’ lodging, or $5,000 cash.

Bob Hannon, United Way president, said the organization sold 250 tickets for $100 each and depending on the prize the winner chooses, will have raised about $17,000. The $1,000 second prize went to Ron Quaranta of Canfield, owner of Caffe Capri in Boardman, while the $500 third prize went to Ryan Wilson, who works at Dearing Compressor and Pump of Boardman.

Winners were chosen by drawing.

Woman killed in crash

MESOPOTAMIA

Brandi L. Miller, 26, of Robert Avenue in Warren died in a two-car crash at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday on state Route 87, west of state Route 534. Miller was eastbound on Route 87 in a Pontiac Grand Am when she lost control and slid left of center into the path of a westbound Dodge Caravan driven by Katrina L. Port, 32, of Dorset, Ohio. The Caravan collided with the passenger side of the Grand Am. Port was taken to the Geauga Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident, and both drivers were wearing seat belts, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. Unsafe speed for road conditions appears to be a factor, the patrol said. The crash remains under investigation.

Man pleads guilty

CANFIELD

A man accused of breaking out of a Beaver Township police cruiser pleaded guilty in Mahoning County Court Canfield on Tuesday to operating a vehicle while impaired. Eric Stanislaw, 44, of New Springfield also was charged with vandalism, theft and escape. The theft charge was dismissed, the vandalism charge was amended to attempted vandalism and the escape charge was amended to failure to comply. Police say Stanislaw was missing for seven hours after he was arrested for OVI. He broke a window in the cruiser when he escaped on his way to the Mahoning County jail. Stanislaw was given probation for the OVI charge.

Cops cite man, find gun

CAMPBELL

Police stopped a 21-year-old Campbell man for driving through a red light, then arrested him after finding a handgun in his car.

At 2 a.m. Tuesday, police pulled over the driver — identified as Spiro Tsagaris of Edward Lane — for the traffic violation, which occurred at the red light on Struthers-Liberty Road at Robinson Road.

Tsagaris then told police that he had a handgun in the car, but that it was not loaded.

Police found magazines for the gun on the floor behind the driver’s seat and on the rear seat behind the driver’s seat.

Because of the easy accessibility of the magazines to the driver, police arrested Tsagaris for violating the city ordinance regarding improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

He also was cited for the traffic offense and given a court date of Friday in Campbell Municipal Court.

Buckle up for safety

CANFIELD

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is encouraging all motorists to buckle up this upcoming holiday season and continue to do so throughout 2014. From 2010 to 2012, 1,193 people who were not wearing an available seat belt were killed in crashes.

“It’s simple. Safety belts save lives and reduce injury in crashes,” said Lt. Nakia Hendrix, commander of the Canfield post. “It is the easiest thing you can do to protect yourself, your family and your friends.”

According to Ohio’s 2012 Observational Seatbelt Survey, 82 percent of motorists were found to be in compliance with Ohio’s seat-belt law. Last year, troopers wrote 94,461 citations for failure to wear a seat belt.

2 hurt in 2-car crash

YOUNGSTOWN

Two people were transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center early Tuesday evening after a two-car accident on Market Street at Dewey Avenue.

Police said that a Mahoning County deputy sheriff was pursuing a Grand Am on Market and had terminated the pursuit. Police at the scene didn’t know why the deputy was pursuing the car.

A short time later, the deputy came upon the car he was following, crashed into another car at the intersection. The person the deputy was after had fled on foot, leaving his daughter, described as being in her teens or early 20s, in the car. The young woman and a person from the other vehicle were taken to the hospital. The driver of the Grand Am had not been apprehended early Tuesday evening.
