First significant area snowfall expected tonight

YOUNGSTOWN — Rain that is to start this afternoon will turn to snow in the evening dropping about one to three inches of snow overnight.

The snow should hit the entire Mahoning Valley with the snowbelt areas of Trumbull and Mercer counties getting the worst of it, said Jess Briganti, weather anchor for “WFMJ Today,” the morning show of 21 WFMJ-TV.

Tuesday will be a “morning where you don’t need to rush” because of the snow, she said.

The National Weather Service reported 0.4 of 1 inch of snow Friday at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna, where it tracks the Valley’s official weather temperatures and precipitation accumulations. But just a few flakes fell in Mahoning County that day.

The NWS expects another one to three inches Tuesday afternoon. Briganti said there could be a small accumulation of snow in the snowbelt then, but likely nothing in the rest of the area.
