Although Youngstown State made mistakes with three fumbles and missed PATs, the Penguins beat South Dakota, 38-34, on Saturday, Nov. 2. Without the mistakes it would have been an easy win.
However, I was talking to myself in the last five-plus minutes as we seemed to revert to 2011 and 2012 play style (i.e., sit on a small lead to save the win). We were able to almost score at will against South Dakota so I don’t understand why we did not try to score more points and put this game away. It was two runs to the middle and a quick pass, then punt for a couple of times during this period. Sitting on this small lead almost bit us on the backside when South Dakota scored to take the lead, 34-31, with less than two minutes to go. Thank God for our amazing offense, which scored the winning TD with 17 seconds remaining in the game.
This team has steadily improved since the first game with Dayon. The team, including the players, coaches, trainers, equipment manager, etc., have played their hearts out for the fans. Because of this, they deserve a full house (both sides of Stambaugh Stadium should be packed and rocking) on Nov. 16 when they play North Dakota State. All Youngstown sports fans should be there to show our support and appreciation for this great season.
And when we go to “The Big One,” I hope YSU, travel agencies and businesses get behind this for once and have available tickets and packages for those of us who would like to attend.
