Levies in Boardman, Campbell approved

Two Campbell and Boardman renewal issues and a Mahoning County Mental Health Board levy passed in Tuesday’s election.
The two Campbell renewals were needed to keep the city operating on budget, officials said. The five-year, 3-mill police and fire levy generates $198,197 annually. It will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $105 annually. The money will go toward wages and equipment needs.
“If these would not have passed, there would have been drastic changes,” said Campbell Mayor William Vansuch.
In addition, the general fund and the city’s park operations would be impacted if the five-year, 1 percent income-tax renewal, which generates $400,000 annually, did not pass.
The tax will begin June 1, and only working adults will be charged. Ninety percent of the tax goes into the general fund, and the rest goes to support Roosevelt Park operations.
Boardman Township needed two five-year renewal levies to maintain current operations, township Administrator Jason Loree said.
The 3.2-mill general operating levy generates $1,258,604 annually and costs the owner of a $100,000 home $37 a year. The township has relied on the levy since 1967.
The 2.2-mill police and fire renewal levy generates $1,969,358 annually and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $67.38 a year. The township police department receives 65 percent of the funding and the fire department receives 35 percent.
“They have become a part of our general operation at the township, so we could keep doing what we are doing and move forward with our 2016 plan,” said Loree.
The Mahoning County Mental Health Board’s five-year, 0.85-mill levy was also passed by voters. The levy raises $3,266,510 annually and provides about 25 percent of the agency’s annual budget.
