Pa. balloting will decide court seat, local races

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Voters across Pennsylvania are about to settle election contests for a multitude of local offices and judgeships, as well as an open seat on a state appeals court.

The Superior Court race is the only statewide contest in today’s election. It pits Republican Vic Stabile, a corporate lawyer in Harrisburg, against Democrat Jack McVay Jr., an Allegheny County judge.

Also up for grabs are the mayors’ offices in communities that include Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Scranton, Lancaster and State College.

Voters also will decide whether four state appellate judges — state Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald Castille and Justice Max Baer and Superior Court judges Susan Gantman and Jack Panella — deserve additional 10-year terms.

Heading into Election Day, political observers predicted a turnout as low as 20 percent.
