Boardman Park Board Meeting
The Board of Park Commissioners of Boardman Township Park will host its monthly meeting on Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. in the Boardman Park Office.
Junior Women’s League to meet Nov. 4
The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will be Nov. 4 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market Street in Boardman 7 p.m. The provisionals: Cheryl Smaldino and Pam Ferguson will still be collecting lap blankets, non-perishable food items and gift cards to donate to our area veterans. Nominations for the 2014-2015 club year will be finalized.
The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women over 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Spaghetti dinner benefit to be Nov. 17
The Jack Aey Cancer Benefit Fund Raiser Spaghetti Dinner and Chinese Auction will be Nov. 17 from 12-4 p.m. at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road (Route 62) in Canfield. Tickets will be $10 for adults, $6 for youth, ages 6 and younger. Takeout will be available. Donations can be made at Home Savings - Joyce Aey, with a memo to Jack Aey Benefit.
AWBA to celebrate 51 years
The 51st Anniversary Celebration of the Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 12 at Rachel’s, located at 54 Westchester Drive in Austintown. A buffet dinner featuring caesar salad, lasagna, chicken francaise and dessert will be served. Entertainment will be provided by The Austintown Fitch High School Show Choir. Members, please note that standing reservations do apply to this meeting. Guests are welcome to come and learn about the opportunities for professional growth and community service that the chapter has afforded to members since it was chartered in 1962. Boardman Park to host mother/son date night
Boardman Park will be hosting its Mom and Son Date “Knight” on Nov. 22 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center.
Come celebrate an evening with your little man making memories; eating, dancing, making crafts and posing for a professional photo as a keepsake of this fun night with mommy’s little Knight. Also, moms, don’t forget to bring your camera for some great photo opportunities.
The boys (ages 3-8) are welcome to dress as their favorite hero, knight/Batman/Star Wars/super hero or just nice dress attire.
Tickets will be on sale at the park office beginning Oct. 22, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Cost is $15 per couple, $5 per additional child for residents and $18 per couple, $5 per additional child for non residents. No walk-in reservations will be accepted.
Relay for Life event set for Nov. 2
The first purple spirit event will be Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Southern Park Mall in Boardman. Relay for Life teams from all over Mahoning County will participate to bring awareness to the fight against cancer and to promote the programs offered by the American Cancer Society. There will be crafts, raffles, fund raising, survivor gifts and Relay for Life and American Cancer Society information available.
Mad moon hike set
The Mad Moon hike will be Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. We’ll hope the nearly full moon will light our way to the Keystone State and back. Meet at Stavitch Bicycle Trail on East Liberty Street in Lowellville.
Moderate rating, 4 miles.
Animal charity ball Nov. 2
Come celebrate Animal Charity’s 50th anniversary at the Animal Charity Fur Ball on Nov. 2, from 7-11 p.m. at the B & O Station Downtown. This one-of-a-kind event will help raise funds for the dogs and cats currently under Animal Charity’s care.
Dance to the Fringe Band, sample food from local restaurants, take your chance with raffles and auctions and more, all while supporting the area’s only humane society.
Tickets are one for $15 and two for $20 and can be purchased at Animal Charity, located at 4140 Market Street in Boardman or by emailing acoofohio@gmail.com. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the event.
All proceeds from Fur Ball will benefit the abused and neglected animals in the care of Animal Charity.
Society to discuss birds
The Audubon Society-Mahoning Valley will host a meeting on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. “Birds in Flight” is our local licensed bird rehabilitation center. Director Heather Merritt will share what it takes to bring birds back to good health after they have an accident. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m., program begins at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Kayak for Newport Finale
Kayakers are invited to bring their boats on our Newport finale for 2013 on Nov. 2 from 1-3 p.m. Participants must be 18-years-old and will be required to complete a waiver. Trip is weather dependent. Offered in partnership with Trumbull Canoe Trails, our local paddling club. Free, but registration is required by calling Ford Nature Center by Nov. 1. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
Birding the sanctuary
Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead this walk on Nov. 16 at 8 a.m. The hike will be at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, a 264-acre park district property closed to the public. Because of parking limitations, reservations must be made by calling Ford Nature Center by 5 p.m., Nov. 15. No walk-ins will be permitted.
Hike ten on the tenth
The Mill Creek Metro Parks invites you to take participate in a 10-mile challenge on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
A to Z hike to be Nov. 24
Join the Mill Creek Metro Parks on an alphabet hike through the Mill Creek Gorge on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. During the hike, hunt for natural items that go from A to Z. Meet at Lanterman’s Mill. Moderate rating, two miles.

Nature’s Architects hike to be Nov. 3
Join the Mill Creek Metro Parks for a brief indoor presentation about North America’s largest rodent — the beaver on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. The hike will go on and beyond the Mindy Henning Memorial Trail to search for signs of beavers and how they have changed the landscape. Meets in classroom A at the MetroParks Farm. Wear boots. Moderate rating, two miles.
Learn yoga basics
Feel comfortable in a class meant for everybody while you learn the basics of yoga taught by Karres Cvetkovich every Sunday in November from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Experience the release of mental and physical tensions that act as powerful barriers to enjoying life. Cost is $10 per class.
Practice Yoga at the park
Yoga will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday in November from 9:30-11 a.m. and from 5:30-7 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Make botanical pottery Nov. 5
Botanical pottery will be Nov. 5 from 5:30-8 p.m. Lynn Cardwell will help students construct a nature-inspired stoneware sushi set. It will be food and dishwasher safe. The clay project will be glazed, fired and ready for pick up in approximately three weeks. Registration required. The event will be at Fellows Riverside Gardens and the cost is $39, FFRG member $30.
Learn to make apple dumplings
Children, ages 6-11, are invited to warm up their autumn with apple dumplings on Nov. 23 from 1:30-3 p.m. Enjoy learning how to make your own apple dumpling, sample dumplings already made, and hear stories about apples throughout history. Held at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Cost is $12, FFRG member $10.
Bountiful Harvest to be Nov. 21, 23
Fellows Riverside Gardens will host Bountiful Harvest Nov. 21 from 1-2 p.m. and Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. until noon. Preschoolers, ages 3-5, will Learn about a few of the vegetables and fruits harvested and eaten at the first Thanksgiving and create a cornucopia using some of these foods. Students will also enjoy a snack and story. Cost is $8, FFRG members $6.
Children’s Nature Hour set
Children’s Nature Hour: Scat? What’s That? will be Nov. 15 and 16 at 10 a.m. Everything, including animal droppings, has a place in nature. Children ages 3-6 will have fun learning about this silly subject. Pre-registration/payment required at Ford Nature Center. Cost is $2 for residents, $3 for non-residents.

Tales for Tots: Bears will be Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at Bears Den Cabin. Children ages 2-3 will learn about the black bear through fun activities and storytelling. Pre-registration/payment required at Ford Nature Center. Cost is $2 for residents, $3 for non-residents.
Savor botanical delights
Botanical delights: Elderberries will be Nov. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Elderberry, named the 2013 herb of the year, is a versatile culinary and medicinal plant. Enjoy learning the history and folklore surrounding the Elder Tree, savor elderberry delights, and make and take home some immune supporting elderberry syrup.

Experience breakfast botany
Breakfast Botany: Arborvitae will be Nov. 22 at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Start your morning with a brisk walk to see plants growing in the Gardens.
Return to the Garden Caf to enjoy a light breakfast and hear interesting facts about trees. Cost is $9 (FFRG member $7).
Enjoy fall bounty botanical dinner
The fall bounty botanical dinner will be Nov. 6 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Experience autumn in the Garden Caf , located at Fellows Riverside Gardens, overlooking Lake Glacier on this culinary journey showcasing vegetables and fruits at their seasonal peak. Begin with a specialty cocktail and delight in tasty dishes prepared for this evening.

MetroMutts presentation to be Nov. 17
MetroMutts: Keeping Harmony in a Household with Children and Dogs will be Nov. 17 at 11 a.m.
The program is presented by The Learning Dog. Teaching our dogs boundaries around children and teaching children to respect a dog’s space is the key to keeping the peace.
Whether it is a new baby on the way or introducing a new dog into a household with children, this seminar will cover all aspects of introductions and maintaining a happy household. Held at Pioneer Pavilion.

Dr. DiDomenico speaks at lecture
Dr. Lawrence A. DiDomenico, managing partner of Ankle and Foot Care Centers, was invited to lecture at an orthopedic international foot surgeon’s conference Sept. 13-14.
The event, the 20th Lubecker Seminar for practice in foot surgery, was offered in Lubeck, Germany.
Dr. DiDomenico spoke on Diabetic limb salvage, Charcot joint arthropathy and the Lapidus bunionectomy. The Lapidus bunionectomy is a procedure used to treat bunions, one of the most common sources of foot pain. Bunions occur when the big toe angles in toward the other toes, causing enlargement of the metatarsophalangeal joint. Restrictive shoes, arthritis and constant pressure inside the joint cause pain for bunion sufferers and may necessitate corrective surgery.
Boardman resident earns scholarship
Gino Divincenzo of Boardman, has been accepted to Ashland University for the fall semester of 2014. Divincenzo, who is a senior at Cardinal Mooney High School, will receive the Director’s Scholarship for $7,000 annually to attend Ashland University.
Library closes for holidays
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving, Nov. 28.

Make rainbow loom bracelets
Kids in grades 4 and up, are invited to the Rainbow Loom craft program on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Rainbow Loom bracelets are fun, unique and great to give away as presents. Each session is limited to the first 12 tweens and teens who sign up. Beginners will be walked through the single pattern bracelet, but templates will be provided for loomers with more experience. Celebrate American Indian Awareness Month with the Redhawk Native American Cultural Society on Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Gene Allison, a member of the Red Hawk American Indian Cultural Society, will appear in full regalia, share artifacts and stories and answer questions. Fun and educational for the whole family.

Join the Boardman library for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. MCCTC students open salon
Cosmetology students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center opened The Salon at MCCTC to the public. Salon hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15-10:30 a.m. Appointments are recommended. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, perms, hair color, manicures and hair removal. All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $5. New to the salon this year is a retail space with Paul Mitchell product, shellac manicures and a redesigned salon space.

Boardman resident earns degree
Chrystin Ritter of Boardman graduated from the University of Akron during the summer of 2013. She received her M.A. in speech language pathology.
Mooney to host Veteran’s Day assembly
Cardinal Mooney will host a Veteran’s Day assembly on Nov. 11. The assembly will feature Marine Sgt. Tod Schuller, a 2005 graduate and Afghan war veteran, as the main speaker.
All veterans, Cardinal Mooney alumni, parents and friends are invited to attend the ceremony, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Those seeking more information should call the Cardinal Mooney alumni office at 330-788-5113.
Caring family portrait sessions offered
Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography
The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.
Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.
Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.
For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

Plato’s Closet goes gold
Plato’s Closet in Boardman, located at 400 Boardman-Poland Road, was recognized for achieving the “Gold Star Standard” for Plato’s Closet stores.
A store reaches the Gold Star Standard when it achieves a set of standards set forth by the franchisor during the evaluation process. The Boardman store achieved the “Customer Experience,” “Store Operations” and “Consistent Brand Identity” standards to earn Gold Star recognition in 2013.
Casino bus trip set
Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.
We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.
The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

New restaurant to open
The Shops at Boardman Park will be soon be offering a new and fun option in dining to the Boardman area: DiBella’s Old Fashioned Subs.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program
Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.
The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
