Boardman Park to host mother/son date night

Boardman Park will be hosting its Mom and Son Date “Knight” on Nov. 22 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center.

Come celebrate an evening with your little man making memories; eating, dancing, making crafts and posing for a professional photo as a keepsake of this fun night with mommy’s little Knight. Also, moms, don’t forget to bring your camera for some great photo opportunities.

The boys (ages 3-8) are welcome to dress as their favorite hero, knight/Batman/Star Wars/super hero or just nice dress attire.

Tickets will be on sale at the park office beginning Oct. 22, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Cost is $15 per couple, $5 per additional child for residents and $18 per couple, $5 per additional child for non residents. No walk-in reservations will be accepted.

AWBA to celebrate 51 years

The 51st Anniversary Celebration of the Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 12 at Rachel’s, located at 54 Westchester Drive in Austintown. A buffet dinner featuring caesar salad, lasagna, chicken francaise and dessert will be served. Entertainment will be provided by The Austintown Fitch High School Show Choir. Members, please note that standing reservations do apply to this meeting. Guests are welcome to come and learn about the opportunities for professional growth and community service that the chapter has afforded to members since it was chartered in 1962.

Mad moon hike set

The Mad Moon hike will be Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. We’ll hope the nearly full moon will light our way to the Keystone State and back. Meet at Stavitch Bicycle Trail on East Liberty Street in Lowellville.

Spaghetti dinner benefit to be Nov. 17

The Jack Aey Cancer Benefit Fund Raiser Spaghetti Dinner and Chinese Auction will be Nov. 17 from 12-4 p.m. at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road (Route 62) in Canfield. Tickets will be $10 for adults, $6 for youth, ages 6 and younger.

Society to discuss birds

The Audubon Society-Mahoning Valley will host a meeting on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. “Birds in Flight” is our local licensed bird rehabilitation center. Director Heather Merritt will share what it takes to bring birds back to good health after they have an accident. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m., program begins at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Prince and Princess party fundraiser to be Nov. 16

Princesses and princes from preschool to third grade are invited to dress up as their favorite Disney princess or prince and join the fun on Nov. 16 at 10 a.m at the Poland library. Parents are invited to bring their camera and smart phone for photo opportunities. Refreshments will be served, compliments of the Friends of PLYMC. Admission is $10 per child.

Each child must be accompanied by an adult; the adult is admitted free. Admission includes a free voucher to the “Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic” presentation at the Covelli Centre.

Kayak for Newport Finale

Kayakers are invited to bring their boats on our Newport finale for 2013 on Nov. 2 from 1-3 p.m. Participants must be 18-years-old and will be required to complete a waiver. Trip is weather dependent. Offered in partnership with Trumbull Canoe Trails, our local paddling club. Free, but registration is required by calling Ford Nature Center by Nov. 1. Birding the sanctuary

Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead this walk on Nov. 16 at 8 a.m. The hike will be at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, a 264-acre park district property closed to the public. Because of parking limitations, reservations must be made by calling Ford Nature Center by 5 p.m., Nov. 15. No walk-ins will be permitted.

Hike ten on the tenth

The Mill Creek Metro Parks invites you to take participate in a 10-mile challenge on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.

A to Z hike to be Nov. 24

Join the Mill Creek Metro Parks on an alphabet hike through the Mill Creek Gorge on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. During the hike, hunt for natural items that go from A to Z. Meet at Lanterman’s Mill. Moderate rating, two miles.

Learn yoga basics

Feel comfortable in a class meant for everybody while you learn the basics of yoga taught by Karres Cvetkovich every Sunday in November from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Experience the release of mental and physical tensions that act as powerful barriers to enjoying life. Cost is $10 per class.

Practice Yoga at the park

Make botanical pottery Nov. 5

Botanical pottery will be Nov. 5 from 5:30-8 p.m. Lynn Cardwell will help students construct a nature-inspired stoneware sushi set. It will be food and dishwasher safe. The clay project will be glazed, fired and ready for pick up in approximately three weeks. Registration required. The event will be at Fellows Riverside Gardens and the cost is $39, FFRG member $30.

Learn to make apple dumplings

Children, ages 6-11, are invited to warm up their autumn with apple dumplings on Nov. 23 from 1:30-3 p.m. Enjoy learning how to make your own apple dumpling, sample dumplings already made, and hear stories about apples throughout history. Bountiful Harvest to be Nov. 21, 23

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host Bountiful Harvest Nov. 21 from 1-2 p.m. and Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. until noon. Preschoolers, ages 3-5, will Learn about a few of the vegetables and fruits harvested and eaten at the first Thanksgiving and create a cornucopia using some of these foods. Students will also enjoy a snack and story. Cost is $8, FFRG members $6.

Children’s Nature Hour set

Children’s Nature Hour: Scat? What’s That? will be Nov. 15 and 16 at 10 a.m. Everything, including animal droppings, has a place in nature. Botanical delights: Elderberries will be Nov. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Elderberry, named the 2013 herb of the year, is a versatile culinary and medicinal plant. MetroMutts presentation to be Nov. 17

MetroMutts: Keeping Harmony in a Household with Children and Dogs will be Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. The program is presented by The Learning Dog. Teaching our dogs boundaries around children and teaching children to respect a dog’s space is the key to keeping the peace. Whether it is a new baby on the way or introducing a new dog into a household with children, this seminar will cover all aspects of introductions and maintaining a happy household. Dr. DiDomenico speaks at lecture

Dr. Lawrence A. DiDomenico, managing partner of Ankle and Foot Care Centers, was invited to lecture at an orthopedic international foot surgeon’s conference Sept. 13-14.

The event, the 20th Lubecker Seminar for practice in foot surgery, was offered in Lubeck, Germany.

Dr. DiDomenico spoke on Diabetic limb salvage, Charcot joint arthropathy and the Lapidus bunionectomy. The Lapidus bunionectomy is a procedure used to treat bunions, one of the most common sources of foot pain. Bunions occur when the big toe angles in toward the other toes, causing enlargement of the metatarsophalangeal joint. Restrictive shoes, arthritis and constant pressure inside the joint cause pain for bunion sufferers and may necessitate corrective surgery.

Business expo to be Nov. 9

C.A.R.E Inc. and Visions 2 Success, LLC will host a business expo and trade show on Nov. 9 from noon until 4 p.m. at the Austintown Township Park.

Any vendor or business owner can purchase a table for $20. The event is free to the public.

C.A.R.E Inc. is a non-profit organization geared toward youth mentorship, training and recreation. Visions 2 Success, LLC is a developmental and resources company for aspiring business owners.

Supper at the Corner to be Nov. 21

Supper at the Corner will be Nov. 21 from 4:30-6 p.m. at Smith Corners United Methodist Church, located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road in Austintown. Roast beef dinner to be Nov. 9

The St. Joseph Men’s Club will sponsor a roast beef dinner Nov. 9 from 5-7 p.m. at the St. Joseph Social Hall, located at 4565 New Road in Austintown. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. The dinner includes roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a beverage and dessert.

MCCTC students open salon

Cosmetology students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open The Salon at MCCTC to the public beginning Oct. 10. Salon hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15-10:30 a.m. Appointments are recommended. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, perms, hair color, manicures and hair removal. All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $5. New to the salon this year is a retail space with Paul Mitchell product, shellac manicures and a redesigned salon space.

Fall quarter auction to be Nov. 15

St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary Home and School will be hosting its fall quarter auction on Nov. 15 at the IHM Parish Center. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m., and the auction will begin at 7 p.m. This is a BYOB event, and therefore, limited to adults only.

Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. The required bid, from 1–4 quarters, for each item will be based on the value of the item, so please bring your own quarters. There will be a snack bar with pop, water and various snack available for purchase. We will have a 50/50 Raffle and a lottery tree drawing, too.

The proceeds of the snack bar will be used to help offset the cost of the fifth-grade trip to Camp Fitch. AMS to host craft show

Austintown Middle School, located at 800 S. Raccoon Road, will be hosting its 30th Annual PTA Craft Show Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. They will be having more than 200 vendors with crafts, food and a chinese auction. Caring family portrait sessions offered

Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography.The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.

Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.

Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.

For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

SJIHM new lunch program

For the 2013-2014 school year, St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary has announced that it will be offering free and reduced-price meals for students unable to pay the full price for meals or milk served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast, After School Care Snack or Special Milk Program. Each school office and central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.

Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
