SJIHM students observe National Law Day

St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary School recognized National Law Day during the week of April 28 when fifth, sixth and seventh-grade classes visited the Mahoning County Courthouse.

Students saw where real estate records are kept, visited a holding cell, observed Judge Mark A. Belinky’s Probate Court and observed a motion hearing in Judge Scott Krichbaum’s Court of Common Pleas.

After the motion hearing, Judge Krichbaum answered students’ questions.

Officer Jeff Toth of the Austintown Police Department talked to kindergarten, first and third-grade students about safety. Topics included being safe at friends’ houses, pedestrian safety and staying away from dangerous items such as chemicals and medicines.

Toth explained that everyday items like glue or medicines could be helpful or dangerous, depending on how you use them. He also spoke to sixth-graders regarding risks and consequences.

“In order to be responsible, you need to make good choices,” said Toth.
