Language arts pen pals got a chance to meet face-to-face at a Pen Pal Bowling event May 22 at Boardman Lanes.

Robinwood Lane Elementary students in Jan Zorman’s fourth-grade class have been partnering with Stadium Drive Elementary students in Debbie Seifert’s second-grade class to writing letters back and forth since January. Each letter had a different topic and the students wrote to each other once a week.

“They would wait for their old fashioned mail and get so excited whenever it came,” said Zorman.

Through the program the students learned sentence structure and letter formation.

“The students also learned how to write actual letters and that’s so important,” said Seifert.

The bowling event allowed the students to finally meet who was on the other end of the letters they received. Seifert said the fourth-graders make great role models for her second-graders.

Zorman echoed Seifert’s sentiment.

“What’s nice about today is I’m watching the older ones take care of the little ones,” said Zorman.

The students didn’t only exchange letters through the pen pal program, they also exchanged treats and Easter baskets.

“It’s a great program because the students take the time to do something nice for someone else they only know on paper,” said Shannon Holdridge, a PTA mom.
