Taking advantage of a nice, sunny day, first- second- and third-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School participated in the school’s annual Field Day May 21.

The day, organized by Hilltop physical education teacher Linda Magyar, gave students the opportunity to play games, including water games and tug-of-war, and run races outside on the playground.

Second-grade students, who celebrated sportsmanship and enjoyed a little friendly competition during the games, completed a hula hoop relay, taxi cab driver race, which utilized a noodle to encourage teamwork, the human chain, during which the students joined hands and passed a hula hoop around the circle without letting go and the classic tug-of-war.

“This is about teamwork,” Magyar told the students. “You have to work together.”

After the tug-of-war, Magyar lined the students up for a sprint race and they took off running, with the boys racing boys and then the girls racing girls.

To end the second-grade’s field day, Magyar had them pair up for a water balloon toss. Students had to take a step back each time he or she caught the balloon, until the last pair was standing with their balloon intact.

Before the students were sent back to class, they enjoyed a popsicle treat provided by the school’s PTO.

Events were planned for each grade level skill set and for the students to use skills they learned throughout the year in gym class. At each grade level, teachers assisted Magyar during the races.
