Girls track defeats Western Reserve Academy, Canton McKinley


The Boardman girls track team traveled to East Canton for the Hornet Relays on May 11 and came away with the first place trophy, beating Western Reserve Academy by two points and finishing with 88 total team points. It was the first year the team has competed in this event.

The shot and discus team continued their record-breaking year by winning both relay events and setting new meet records. The shot put relay team of seniors Giovanna Silvestri and Katrina Watkins and sophomore Ka’nisha White threw a combined total of 102’5” to break the previous meet record of 97’7.5” set by Hoover in 2007. That same team won the discus competition by throwing 312’11” and broke the previous record of 307’7” set by Waterloo in 2004. Silvestri was the individual winner in both events throwing 35’10” in the shot and 126’6” in the discus.

The high jump team, consisting of juniors Morgan Hambrick and Brianna Fonderlin and freshman Sydney Lewis, won another field event relay for the team with a combined height of 13’9”. In the high jump Hambrick won the event with a height of 5’0”.

The distance medley team of junior Brandi Gatte, senior Daisy Corso and sophomores Regan O’Hara and Jordan Grantonic won in a time of 11:56.93. The 4x800 meter relay team won in a time of 10:32.58. Team members were juniors Emma Schwendeman and Trista Cunningham, Daisy Corso and Regan O’Hara.

Second place honors went to the 4x100 meter relay team of Hambrick, Fonderlin, junior Nikki Hillard and freshman Arianna Cuevas with a time of 52.49.

Five events finished in third place for the team including the 4x200 meter relay team of junior Jada Redd, and sophomores Alison Green, Stephanie DeMain and Heaton O’Hara running 1:55.26, the 4x40 meter relay team of Heaton O’Hara, Green, Cuevas and Fonderlin running 4:25.19 and the 4x1600 meter relay team of Schwendeman, junior Breanna Gatte, freshman Elly Larrier and Cunningham in a time of 23:51.92.

In the field events, the long jump team of Hillard, Lewis and sophomore Jordyn Bricker took third place with a combined distance of 37’6”.

The pole vault relay team of sophomores Brittany Chamberlain and Brooke Harsh vaulted a total of 14’6” to take another third place finish. Rounding out the scoring was the shuttle hurdle relay team of Lewis, junior Anya Bolger, Bricker and DeMain running 1:16.86.
