Erie Terminal receives Heritage Ohio award

Erie Terminal Place, 112 W. Commerce St., has been awarded “Best Multi-Family Residential Rehab” by Heritage Ohio.

The group, which also awarded The Market Block Building at 147 W. Market St., in Warren, home to The Raymond John Wean Foundation, with the Best Commercial Rehabilitation Award earlier this week, focuses on both development and redevelopment efforts in downtown’s statewide.

Communities, organizations and individuals from across the state submitted nominations for the best rehab award and others, which recognize preservation and revitalization efforts.

Erie Terminal, built in 1923 as a passenger depot and office building for the Erie Railroad, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

It was purchased by local property developer Dominic Marchionda in 2011, whose company spent about $9 million to convert the once-vacant structure into a 65 bed, 40-apartment building for students at Youngstown State University and young professionals.

It opened in August 2012.
