Recently, several Canfield High School art students competed in the Scholastic Art Awards and the Mahoning County Student Art Show at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. The Scholastic award honorable mention winners were Marissa DeSanto, Rachael Riccardo, Allison Conroy, Lauren Adams, Mykell Rushton, Gabby Meyer, Haley Holt and Kellie Daily. Silver Key Awards went to Marissa Desanto, Haley Holt, Jennifer Morris, Adam Nye and Marissa Rothbauer. Gold Key Awards went to Kellie Daily, Carigan McGuire and Marissa Rothbauer. Best of Show ‘American Vision’ Awards went to Catherine Brown and Mykell Rushton.

Brown’s piece, titled “Frightened,” was subsequently awarded a National ‘American Visions’ Gold Medal. Her piece is currently on display in New York City for one year.

Results of the Mahoning County Student Art Show included honorable mention honors going to Anna Luongo and Adam Nye. Winning third place were Izzy Aey, Allison Conroy, Marisa DeSanto, Olivia Governor, Haley Holt, Chandace Regano and Marcella Sinclair. Elena Billy, Paige Bindinotto, Megan Factor, Jennifer Morris, Rachel Riccardo and Mykell Rushton were awarded second place. First place awards were given to Lauren Adams, Bonnie Anderson, Marisa DeSanto and Ariana Ellis. Best of Show went to Bonnie Anderson.

Two Canfield High School students were finalists in the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. Nagmita Shrestha was awarded first place for the sixth Congressional district. Her winning piece will be on display for a year in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Haley Holt will have her piece displayed in Congressman Bill Johnson’s Salem office for one year.

When asked about being awarded the National ‘American Visions’ Gold Medal, Brown, a senior, said she was excited she had won.

“I was very excited to win the award. My piece, ‘Frightened,” was inspired by history. I like history and I thought about the Cold War and how they were taught to duck and cover. I have always liked art and I tied it to another one of my likes,” Brown said.

Rushton, a senior, said her Best of Show ‘American Vision’ Award piece was inspired by her best friend.

“The piece is just me and my best friend goofing around. She moved away and I never get to see her anymore. Art has always been my passion, but I was shocked to be awarded this prize,” Rushton said.

Shrestha, a sophomore, said she was surprised and honored to be awarded first place for the sixth Congressional District for her charcoal self-portrait.

“I always have fun with art. I was surprised and honored to win and I get to travel to Washington, D.C. for the showing of all the pieces,” Shrestha said.

Shrestha is the first Canfield High School art student to win at this level.

Anderson, a sophomore, has always been passionate about art. Her Mahoning County Student Art Show Best of Show piece was a Sharpie thin tip drawing of a crow.

“Birds are my favorite species, so I drew a crow and used a picture as reference. I was surprised with my win but I am also proud of myself,” Anderson said.

Sophomore Lauren Adams’ first place piece in the Mahoning County Student Art Show was 3-D art. Adams created a dog out of puzzle pieces.

“Art has always been my passion and I created this piece as an assignment for class,” Adams said.

Junior Allison Conroy said she was inspired by old toys in her basement to create her Mahoning County Student Art Show third place piece.

“I was looking around our basement and it was sad to see all our old toys just sitting there, so I used them to create a junk art sculpture,” Conroy said.

Conroy glued the little toys and other pieces together and spray painted it to create her 3-D art.

“It was cool to win third place. I wasn’t sure about the piece. I thought people would look at it and just see junk, but it’s nice to know other people liked it,” Conroy said.

Junior Anna Luongo’s Mahoning County Student Art Show honorable mention sculpture was inspired by Tim Burton’s movies, “Edward Scissorhands,” “Nine,” “Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Frankenweenie.”

“I was shocked I won honorable mention. I was not expecting anything out of it. Art is a hobby for me. I enjoy it,” Luongo said.

Several of the students’ winning pieces were on display, along with pieces from students at every school in the district, at the Canfield High School Art Show May 22-23.

“Our students might not go into an art career, but it is very possible they could serve on boards or committees in the future where they need to know about art and they will be prepared,” said Kevin Hoopes, Canfield High School art teacher.
