ABWA meeting set

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women Association will meet June 11 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. Adam Lee will speak on nutrition for all ages. Networking will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include a variety of croissant sandwiches, pasta salad, garden salads and strawberry mouse for dessert at the cost of $15.

YSU searches for majorettes, feature twirlers

The YSU marching band will have auditions for majorette and feature twirler positions for the upcoming marching band 2013 season on June 14 from 5-7 p.m. (learn routine) and June 15 from 9-11:30 a.m. (audition) Incoming freshmen and current students are encouraged to audition for the 2013 season.

Participants should plan on two days for the full audition process. Both sessions will be in Stambaugh Stadium’s Gym A.

Boughner earns Eagel Scout Award

Benjamin Boughner, son of Don and Pam Boughner of Canfield, was presented with the Eagle Scout Award at a special Eagle Scout Court of Honor May 1 in Canfield United Methodist Church. Boughner has earned 26 merit badges in his time with the organization and is a junior at Canfield High School. He splits his time between band, the scouts and employment at Inner Circle Pizza.

Malone announces dean’s list students

Canfield residents Charles Bancroft (junior biology pre professional track), Daniel Bancroft (sophomore biology pre professional track), and Ryan Roush (freshman exercise science pre physical therapy) were named to the dean’s list at Malone University for the spring 2013 semester. To be named to the dean’s list, one must carry a minimum of 12 credit hours and receive a grade point average of 3.5 or better.

Drive through chicken dinner

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located ar 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, will have a drive through chicken dinner from 4 p.m. until they are sold out on June 6. The cost is $7 and includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Mahoning Riverfest to be June 8

Friends of the Mahoning River will have its second annual Mahoning Riverfest on June 8 from noon to 4 p.m. at the B & O Station, located ar 530 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. The Riverfest will begin with a dock ribbon cutting ceremony.

Kayak and canoe rides will be available courtesy of Trumbull Canoe Trails. There will be an art festival inside the B & O from noon to 7 p.m. The cost is $1.

The event will also include educational and historical presentations and displays with a focus on the river and the environment. There is no charge for parking.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation donates to library

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently announced the award of $3000 to Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County to support literacy programs. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education.

Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

Slavic festival to be June 15

Simply Slavic, the downtown festival created specifically to celebrate Greater Youngstown’s colorful Slavic community will take place on June 15 from noon to midnight on Federal Plaza East. The event began in 2011 to educate the community about Slavic heritage. The event will feature live music, folk dance performances, homemade food, educational exhibits and ethnic vendors.

Local company awarded accreditation

Caring Hearts of the Valley has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in home care.

The award recognizes Caring Heart’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state of the art standards. Caring Hearts of the Valley underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site survey in May. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated Caring Hearts for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. Hospice of the Valley to have volunteer class

Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer class will begin June 7 at the Villa Maria Community Center’s Tabourat Center, located at 225 Villa Marie Road, Villa Maria, Pa. Classes are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Friday for five weeks, through July 5.

Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how volunteers fit into that team. Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes as well as helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility.

New volunteers are particular needed for western Pennsylvania, as well as for all areas of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Although the training is at the Villa this time, volunteers are assigned to patients closer to their homes.

Republicans club picnic

The Canfield Republican Women’s Club will be hosting its annual picnic and live auction at McMahon Hall at the Mahoning County Experimental Farm, located across from the Canfield Fairgrounds, June 6 from 5:30-9 p.m.

The cost is $20 per person and will include catering by A La Carte. Alcoholic beverages will not be provided, but you may bring your own. The evening will include a silent auction, live auction by George Roman and guest speaker Matthew Henderson, Communications director for the GOP. The Master of Ceremonies will be Mark Monroe, the Mahoning County GOP Chairman.

Tour an engine

The Canfield Historical Society invites the public to join them today at 10 a.m. to tour collector Norm Anderson’s Internal Combustion Engine display at 7281 Akron-Canfield Road in Canfield. The tour is free, and open to adults or teens who have an interest in seeing how an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) works. The ICE is an engine in which combustion of fuel occurs with air in a combustion chamber. Anyone wishing to attend the tour is encouraged to call the Canfield Historical Society at 330-533-3458 and leave a message saying they want to attend the ICE tou with their name and number of people attending.

Grow Youngstown to offer fresh produce

Grow Youngstown will offer fresh produce direct to the residents of Mahoning Valley through its Community Supported Agriculture market, which purchases food direct from local farmers. Participants can pick up their farm fresh goods on Tuesdays at the YMCA in Boardman, Fellows Riverside Gardens, East Side Public Library and Poland Public Library. Orders can also be delivered to your door for a fee.

Adult Career Center hosts informational sessions

Adults interested in enrolling career certification programs this fall offered at the Adult Career Center Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are invited to attend one of several free informational sessions this spring and summer at MCCTC, located at 7300 North Palmyra Road in Canfield.

Informational sessions include career investigation as well as reading, math and language assessments. Attendees will tour the building, meet instructors and learn about financial aid opportunities. Upcoming informational sessions will be June 5 at 6 p.m., June 18 at 6 p.m. and July 9 at 6 p.m.

TOPS weight loss meeting set

TOPS Chapter No. 1805 hosts meetings encouraging weight loss each Wednesday at Canfield Christian Church. Weigh-in is 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. and a meeting follows until 9 a.m. For more information, call Judy Toth at 330-533-2464.

Food assistance offered

Every third Thursday of the month, bags of groceries are distributed at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. In order to sign up, you will need to be a resident of Mahoning County and bring a picture I.D., proof of income (dated for 2013) and medical cards or birth certificates for proof of dependent children.

Vendors needed for market event

The Junior Women’s League of Canfield is recruiting vendors for the 44th annual Fall Market Event on the Canfield Village Green. This year’s event will take place on Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participating vendors may range from home-based businesses to art and craft merchandise to non-profit organizations.
