ABWA meeting set

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women Association will meet June 11 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. Adam Lee will speak on nutrition for all ages. Networking will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include a variety of croissant sandwiches, pasta salad, garden salads and strawberry mouse for dessert at the cost of $15. SOV hosts summer concert series

Shepherd of the Valley- Boardman will host three concerts this summer. The concerts will be June 18 - The Steve Fazzini Band, July 18 - The Calypso Gypsies Trio and Aug. 20 - The Jim Frank Trio. All concerts are free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will move indoors. YSU searches for majorettes, feature twirlers

The YSU marching band will have auditions for majorette and feature twirler positions for the upcoming marching band 2013 season on June 14 from 5-7 p.m. (learn routine) and June 15 from 9-11:30 a.m. (audition) Incoming freshmen and current students are encouraged to audition for the 2013 season. Participants should plan on two days for the full audition process. Both sessions will be in Stambaugh Stadium’s Gym A.

Benefit for local child

St. Charles Church, located at 7345 Westview Dr. in Boardman, will host a spaghetti dinner benefit on June 9 from 1-5 p.m. for Poland resident Jackson Diaz, who was diagnosed with Apert Syndrome shortly after his birth last June. Tickets will be $4 for children 3-12 years old and $8 for adults age 12 and older. There will be a 50/50 raffle, basket raffles, and a bake sale. Funds raised at the benefit will go toward helping the family afford medical expenses and surgeries. To learn more, visit www.oursunjackson.org.

Mahoning Riverfest to be June 8

Friends of the Mahoning River will have its second annual Mahoning Riverfest on June 8 from noon to 4 p.m. at the B & O Station, located ar 530 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. The Riverfest will begin with a dock ribbon cutting ceremony. Kayak and canoe rides will be available courtesy of Trumbull Canoe Trails.

There will be an art festival inside the B & O from noon to 7 p.m. The cost is $1. The event will also include educational and historical presentations and displays with a focus on the river and the environment. There is no charge for parking.

Augustin named to Dean’s list

Kelsie Augustin of Boardman, has been named to Chatham University’s Dean’s list for the 2013 spring term. She is a first-year student. To be eligible for Dean’s List, students must carry a GPA of at least 3.5 and complete a minimum of 12 credits for a letter grade.

Roch earns Dean’s list

Laura Roch has been named to the Dean’s List at Kent State University for the spring semester. She is a 2012 graduate of Ursuline High School and is the daughter of Joanne and David Roch.

Aldan named to Dean’s list

Ashley Aldan, a 2011 Boardman graduate, has been named to the Dean’s List for spring semester at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She is majoring in anthropology, with a minor in forensic science and geography. Ashley was also inducted as a Charter Member of Lambda Alpha which is the anthropology honors fraternity. She is the daughter of Jack and Rose Aldan of Boardman.

Employee recognized at annual conference

Ellen Craig of Plato’s Closet in Boardman received a Sales Excellence Award at the company’s recent annual conference in Austin. The company focused on ways to help franchisees maintain the momentum that resulted in another record sales year in 2012. Through workshops, presentations by guest speakers and one-on-one meetings with Plato’s Closet sales and operations leaders, this year’s conference was designed to provide franchisees with tactics and business insights to help them maintain a strong competitive position as the brand celebrates its 15th anniversary.

Dollar General donates to library

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently announced the award of $3000 to Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County to support literacy programs. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.A complete list of grant recipients may be found online at www.dgliteracy.org.

Hospice of the Valley to have volunteer class

Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer class will begin June 7 at the Villa Maria Community Center’s Tabourat Center, located at 225 Villa Marie Road, Villa Maria, Pa. Classes are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Friday for five weeks, through July 5.

Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how volunteers fit into that team.

Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes as well as helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility.

New volunteers are particular needed for western Pennsylvania, as well as for all areas of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Although the training is at the Villa this time, volunteers are assigned to patients closer to their homes.

Slavic festival to be June 15

Simply Slavic, the downtown festival created specifically to celebrate Greater Youngstown’s colorful Slavic community will take place on June 15 from noon to midnight on Federal Plaza East. The event began in 2011 to educate the community about Slavic heritage. The event will feature live music, folk dance performances, homemade food, educational exhibits and ethnic vendors.

Lions give trees

In the article “Lions club plants seeds at Robinwood Lane,” there was a misprint. The Lions club gave trees to the students at Robinwood Lane to plant for Arbor Day.

Adult Career Center hosts informational sessions

Adults interested in enrolling career certification programs this fall offered at the Adult Career Center Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are invited to attend one of several free informational sessions this spring and summer at MCCTC, located at 7300 North Palmyra Road in Canfield. Informational sessions include career investigation as well as reading, math and language assessments. Attendees will tour the building, meet instructors and learn about financial aid opportunities. Upcoming informational sessions will be June 5 at 6 p.m., June 18 at 6 p.m. and July 9 at 6 p.m.
