SEBRING

The western Mahoning County Office of the Mahoning-Youngstown Community Action Partnership celebrates Community Action Awareness Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

Activities will take place inside and outside of the western Mahoning County office, 305 N. 15th St. Free blood-pressure screenings, food, refreshments, information and applications for programs offered to the community, prizes and giveaways will be offered.

“This is an ideal opportunity for people to enroll and re-enroll their children in the Head Start program, find out about transportation services, including Take a Trip Thursdays, learn about HEAP’s Summer Crisis Program and determine if any of the services may be of use,” said Andrea Capirano, manager of MYCAP’s rural services office.

The event is intended for residents of Sebring, Beloit, Goshen Township, Lake Milton and other towns and villages close to the western Mahoning County office.

“MYCAP provides services for eligible residents throughout Mahoning County, so it’s important to reach individuals and families who live along the western part of the county, too,” Capirano added. “Unfortunately, the request for help continues to be in demand in all parts of the county. That’s why we have two offices, to serve as many people as possible.”

Community-action agencies are local private and public nonprofit organizations that carry out the Community Action Program. As part of the War on Poverty, they were founded by the 1964 Economic Opportunity Act to fight poverty by empowering the poor. Federal and state dollars are used locally to offer specialized programming in communities.
