Man caught after burglary

Staff report

GIRARD

Police arrested a man in connection with a house break-in on Churchill Road on Sunday afternoon.

Officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Churchill Road about 2:55 p.m. by a man who reports state is a Niles police officer.

He was off duty and looking for the person who broke in through a second story window and took a 50-inch television, the report said.

As Girard police arrived, they spotted a man on the porch of the home next door later identified as Zachary Chace, 21, also of Churchill Road. Officers asked Chace if he had seen anything, and Chace told police no, reports said.

An elderly woman who lives in the home that was broken into and is related to the Niles officer told police that whoever took the television went into the backyard of the home where Chace was spotted. The woman described the man who was in her house, and her description matched Chace’s but he denied being involved, reports said.

Chace refused to let police inside to search for the television so they waited while the paperwork for a warrant was prepared, reports said. Chace then admitted that he took the television, and it was found in the basement, reports said.

Chace was taken to the Trumbull County jail on the charge of burglary. He was arraigned in Municipal Court on Tuesday and given a bond of $15,000. He’s due in court next Wednesday.
