BERLIN CENTER

The Mahoning County coroner’s office is checking tentative identifications of the badly burned victims of a Monday night truck collision against dental records in an attempt to make positive identifications of the deceased.

The driver and passenger trapped in a rental truck died at the scene of the fiery collision with a tractor-trailer truck on state Route 534. The tractor-trailer driver was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The deceased are being listed as John Does 1 and 2 by the coroner’s office.

The tractor-trailer driver was identified as Mark Hoskins, 54, of Alliance, who was listed in fair condition late Tuesday.

The crash occurred at 11:07 p.m. between Leffingwell and Western Reserve roads, the patrol said.

The southbound rental truck went off the right side of the road, overcorrected, and went left of center, hitting the northbound tractor-trailer head-on, the patrol said. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames.
