OSHP arrests 3 on drug charges

Austintown

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers from the Canfield Post arrested three Youngstown men early Monday on felony drug charges.

Troopers seized several bags of suspected cocaine, crack cocaine, pills, heroin and marijuana after a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Austintown. Troopers stopped the car for speed at 3:25 a.m. A news release from OSHP said the vehicle was traveling 113 mph in a 65 mph zone.

A police dog checked the vehicle, and the suspected drugs were found.

The driver, Alden Young, and passengers Shane Overton and Michael R. Stanley, all 21, were charged with felony drug possession and taken to the Mahoning County jail. Young also is charged with aggravated drug trafficking.

Agency calls for help for gambling

CLEVELAND

A state agency wants Ohio’s college and university counselors to help keep compulsive gambling from becoming a problem among young people as gambling venues multiply.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reports that the Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services hopes prevention and treatment of gambling addiction can be improved at universities and colleges.

An Ohio State University conference last month alerted counselors, though some said they hadn’t detected widespread addiction at their schools.

But the Ohio Casino Control Commission says the number of players under age 30 voluntarily banning themselves from Ohio’s new casinos is growing. It says younger players represent a fourth of the 365 names on a voluntary exclusion list.

A group that co-sponsored the OSU conference wants to prevent student gambling from becoming a blatant problem.
