Youngstown State junior sprinter Ciara Jarrett finished with the 21st-best time in three heats of action of the 200-meter dash during the NCAA East Prelims.

The top three runners from each heat and the next six times advanced to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Jarrett had a time of 23.94 seconds, one night after running a 24.10.

The top two times in the 200m were in Jarrett’s heat and four of the eight runners advanced to the NCAA meet

Denham, Hamilton win Memorial Mile

BOARDMAN

Boardman’s Scott Denham (4 minutes, 17 seconds) edged Struthers’ Ryan Pavlicko (4:23) to finish first out of 250 runners the 23rd annual Memorial Mile on Monday.

Youngstown State’s Samantha Hamilton was the top female for the second straight year, finishing in 4:45.

Charles Novak won the men’s masters crown and Karen Grantonic was the first in the female masters category.

Injuries sideline pair from US training camp

Soccer midfielder Maurice Edu has dropped out of the U.S. men’s training camp ahead of the next World Cup qualifiers because of a sports hernia.

Edu, fellow midfielder Brek Shea and defender Corey Ashe all withdrew Monday.

No replacements were added to the roster, which now stands at 28 players.

Shea, who has a lingering calf strain, is returning to Dallas for treatment and could rejoin the U.S. team at a later date.

The Americans play Belgium here Wednesday in an exhibition.

Kiprono defends crown at Bolder Boulder race

BOULDER, Colo.

Allan Kiprono defended his Bolder Boulder crown as he led Kenya to the International Team Challenge title, ending Ethiopia’s six-year reign in the Memorial Day race.

Kiprono sprinted away from the field late in the 10-kilometer competition on Monday to finish in a time of 29 minutes, 28.79 seconds.

His Kenyan teammates weren’t far behind in this unique competition, where three runners from each country team up and their combined finishes determine the winner. Ethiopia finished second.

Merima Mohammed of Ethiopia cruised to an easy victory in the women’s race, raising her hands as she crossed the finish line in 33:58.79.

Barcelona gives Neymar 5-year contract

Brazilian striker Neymar is officially a Barcelona player.

Neymar signed a five-year contract with the Spanish powerhouse on Monday, two days after announcing he decided to join the Catalan club instead of Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old star will join up with Brazil’s Confederations Cup squad today.

Silverette captures Monmouth feature

OCEANPORT, N.J.

Silverette took the lead near the stretch and held on to win the $60,000 Red Cross Stakes at Monmouth Park on Monday, beating Angel’s Glory by a length.

Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Paco Lopez, the 4-year-old filly ran the six furlongs over a fast track in 1:093/5 and returned $6.80, $3.80 and $2.40. It was the fourth win in eight career starts for Silverette, who has earned $198,802.
