Mooney grad Reese earns All-America

Cardinal Mooney High graduate Eddie Reese, a junior second baseman at the College of Wooster, was named second team All-America and was also named first team All-Mideast Region by both the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com.

Reese batted .370 with 22 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, and 54 RBIs this spring, lead Wooster in all of those categories except for batting average.

The 22 doubles tied for the sixth-most in team history. Reese also paced the squad in walks (30) and slugging (.682) and he concluded 2013 on a 13-game hitting streak.

Brandon Spithaler won the B.O.S.S. traditional Sprint Car race at Mercer Raceway Park after winning the opener for the winged Sprints presented by Luxaire Heating & Cooling and New Wilmington Motors.

His first win in the car fielded by Tom Burkey propelled him into the points lead for the touring series.

J.R. McGinley led wire to wire in the non-stop feature for the Approved Toilet Rentals 358 Modifieds.

Cody Bova picked up the win in the Big Daddy’s Speed Center/Rock Concrete Modified Lites, his second in a row.

At Sharon Speedway on Saturday winning races were Mike Pegher, Jr.-Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Dirt Late Model Touring Series, Jeff Johnson-Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Jeremy Double-HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, Travis Creech-Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks and Kelvin Kohna-H.P.M. 3/4 Late Models.

Pegher charged from the ninth starting spot, while coming out unscathed in a big accident that took out several of the frontrunners.

Pegher passed Chad Ruhlman on the ensuing restart and go on for the 25-lap Barris Supply feature win.

Nibali takes Giro title; Cavendish wins stage

BRESCIA, Italy

Vincenzo Nibali coasted to the Giro d’Italia title in the final stage of the three-week cycling classic Sunday, while Mark Cavendish won the 21st leg in a sprint finish for his fifth victory in this year’s race.

For Nibali, an Italian with the Astana team, the title cemented his status in an elite group of current riders considered capable of winning Grand Tours, along with Alberto Contador, Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins.

Nibali took the overall leader’s pink jersey after the seventh stage, never gave it up, and padded his lead by winning the final two mountain stages in dominating fashion.

Rigoberto Uran of Colombia finished second overall and Cadel Evans of Australia, the 2011 Tour de France winner, was third, 4:43 and 5:52 behind Nibali, respectively.

Emotional last soccer match with Santos

Neymar couldn’t hold back the tears in his last match with Santos before joining Barcelona.

Neymar cried profusely as the Brazilian national anthem was sung before the match against Flamengo on Sunday in the opening round of the Brazilian league.

Neymar announced his move to Barcelona late Saturday, a day after Santos accepted offers from both the Spanish champion and rival Real Madrid and said the 21-year-old forward should pick.

Schiaparelli takes Great Lady M Stakes

INGLEWOOD, Calif.

Schiaparelli won the $73,710 Great Lady M Stakes by 21/2 lengths at Betfair Hollywood Park on Sunday, giving jockey Joe Talamo his fifth straight stakes victory at the track.

Talamo’s streak began last weekend when he won the Fran’s Valentine, the Marjorie L. Everett Handicap and the Railbird Stakes. He won the American Handicap on Saturday. Schiaparelli ran 6 furlongs on the turf in 1:08.66 and paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10 as the 3-5 favorite.
