Work will begin next month on a South Side park

Construction on a South Side park is expected to start next month in an area of the city that saw its playground close two years ago to make room for a grocery store.
The city received four proposals for work at what will be called the Glenwood Community Park, on the corner of Glenwood and Sherwood avenues.
The city had estimated it would cost $150,000 for that work.
Of the four proposals received Friday by the city, two of them were under the estimate, with MJ General Contractors of Hilliard, Ohio, submitting the apparent low proposal of $138,281.10.
The board of control must approve the contract before work can commence. That approval is expected within a few weeks.
Also, about $25,000 to $30,000 of the expense will be eliminated because companies seeking the work were asked to include the cost of building a full asphalt basketball court.
The city doesn’t currently own the property where the court is to be located, said Charles Shasho, deputy director of the public works department.
The court will be built next year, said Robert Burke, the city’s park and recreation director.
The work at the new park includes a pavilion, restrooms, fencing and a sidewalk as well as excavating, grading, plumbing and a drainage system, Shasho and Burke said.
MJ General Contractors also is the company that was awarded a $43,000 contract for playground equipment at the new park, Burke said.
The playground equipment will be installed next month, Burke said.
The entire project will take up to 75 days to complete once it starts, Shasho said.
“We’re very excited to get this park built,” Burke said.
Fosterville Park, near the new park location, closed two years ago and was replaced by a Bottom Dollar food grocery store.
Bottom Dollar provided $30,000 toward the new park, and PNC Bank gave $20,000.
The rest of the money for the park is coming from the city’s capital- improvement fund.
