More than 15,000 people came downtown for the Memorial Day parade 60 years ago, but none had a better view than this trio of 11-year-olds, William Payne, John Kelly and Joseph Pollock. The 1953 parade began at 10:26 a.m. with a formation of nine jet interceptor planes from the base at the Youngstown Municipal Airport flying low over Central Square.
