MEMORIAL DAY | Events schedule

Memorial Day events as submitted to The Vindicator. Unless otherwise noted, all events are on Monday, the official holiday.

Mahoning

Austintown: Memorial Day parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at Marc’s parking lot at Mahoning Avenue and Idaho Road and will proceed to Austintown Fitch High School Veterans Memorial. A service begins at 11 a.m., sponsored by Austintown Memorial American Legion Post 301 and Austintown VFW Post. Main speaker will be Lt. Col. Rodrick A. Hosler, U.S. Army, retired.

Boardman: The Kiwanis Club of Boardman will host its 109th Memorial Day Parade and Service. Participants will assemble at 9:30 a.m. at Boardman Center Middle School, and the parade will begin at 10 a.m. Grand Marshal Gary Rhamy will speak at the parade and service. The Reverend Ash Welch of Boardman United Methodist Church will give the invocation. Lt. Col. Bill Moss, USAF retired, will lead the pledge of allegiance and place a wreath for deceased veterans. The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will perform in the parade and service. National American Miss Ohio Brandy Prusak, state senator Joe Schiavoni and state representative Ron Gerberry will participate in the parade. In inclement weather, the service will be moved to the Center Middle School auditorium.

Campbell: American Legion F.D.R. Post 560 and the 37th division will host a Memorial Day Program at 8 a.m. at the Legion Hall, 103 Twelfth St. Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will be keynote speaker. Members will travel to St. John’s Cemetery at 9 a.m. for Memorial Day Services and proceed to Archangel Michael, St. John’s Russian, St. Nicholas and St. Michael’s and Pioneer Methodist cemeteries. A program at the Campbell Memorial High School monument will begin at 11 a.m. Remarks from Judge Patrick Cunning, Mayor William VanSuch and Campbell schools superintendent Mathew Bowen will be shared. Campbell High School Band will perform. There will be a firing squad and taps will be performed. Refreshments will be served after the service at Legion Hall.

Jackson Township: Memorial Day observances in Jackson Township will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Vietnam Memorial in the Jackson-Milton High School football field, where the names of Jackson- Milton students who died in Vietnam will be read. A parade begins at 9 a.m., proceeding west on Mahoning Avenue and north on state Route 45 to the Jackson Township cemetery. Vehicles, equestrian and marching units will be featured.

Lowellville: St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Villa Marie Road, will host a Memorial Day Mass at 9 a.m. in the cemetery hall. Refreshments will be served.

Lowellville: The village Memorial Day event begins with a procession at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Cemetery at Stewart Road and Badal Drive. Everett Oliver, commander of Lowellville American Legion Post 247, will read the names of veterans who died since last year, and the Rev. John Jerek of Holy Rosary Church will give the invocation. Mayor James Iudiciani Sr. will make remarks, and Lori Stone is the guest speaker. At 10:40 a.m., the procession will head to Poland Township Cemetery, on Struthers Road, with chaplain Charles Maholtz leading the prayer. There will be a ceremony at village hall at the Veterans Monument at 11 a.m., and a luncheon follows at village hall at 11:50 a.m.

New Middletown: A Memorial Day parade and service for New Middletown and Springfield will start at 9:30 a.m. at Frattaroli Sparkle Market, 11045 Main St., and end at Springfield Elementary School, 10580 Main St. A memorial service at the elementary’s flagpole will take place at 10 a.m.

Poland: At 9 a.m., Squadron 15 Four Chaplains Memorial Service will be at the Post 15 home. The 41st annual parade begins at 10 a.m. at Lee and Cortland streets, and lineup begins at 8:45 a.m. at Baird Mitchell Field. The Main Street Bridge Memorial Service for those lost at sea will be at 10:15 a.m., and memorial services in Riverside Cemetery are at 10:30 a.m. Grand marshal is Richard Ames. Speaker is Lt. Col. John Boccieri, and chaplain of the day is Pastor Mike Grant. In case of inclement weather, ceremonies will be at Poland Middle School gymnasium.

Struthers: 9 a.m. service at Korean Memorial Bridge with Jerry Arendas, commander of VFW 7538, for those buried at sea. The 10 a.m. service will be at Struthers High School Veterans Memorial, where Commander Ray Ornelas of VFW 3538 will lead. Music by Struthers High School Band. Placing of the wreath by Ladies of VFWs 3538 and 7538. Speaker will be Joe Norah, superintendent of Struthers Schools. At 11 a.m., a service at Lake Park Cemetery veterans’ plot will be led by Commander Donna Burford of American Legion Post 158. Main speaker will be Commander Jan Brown of Post 44. Ladies Auxiliary of Posts 3538 and 7538 will place wreaths. Ray Ornelas will present a POW/MIA tablet. Struthers High School band will furnish music, and Boy Scout Troop 101 will lead the procession.

Struthers: Tri-State Detachment 494, Marine Corps league, will conduct memorial services for Marines and other service members from Ohio who were killed during the terrorist bombing of Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon on Oct. 23, 1983. The service will begin at 8 a.m. at the Peace Keepers Memorial, located along Hamilton Lake on state Route 616.

Youngstown: VFW Post 6488 and Ladies Auxiliary will have a memorial service at 1 p.m. at VFW Post 6488, 2065 Coitsville- Hubbard Road. A special tribute will be made to the widows of our departed comrades and Robert E. Bush Jr. Keynote speaker is Lt. Col. and former state legislator John Boccieri.

Youngstown: American Legion Post 504, 2225 Glenwood Ave., will have a memorial service at 5 p.m. Keynote speaker is veteran Sonia Walton. Veteran Herman Adams will be honored at the service. A dinner will be served.

Youngstown: An 11:15 a.m. Memorial Day event will take place at the Smoky Hollow Memorial, at E. Rayen Ave. and Walnut Street. Improvements to the memorial will be unveiled and John McNally will be keynote speaker.

TRUMBULL

Brookfield: The annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony will be at 10 a.m. at the former Brookfield Middle School on Grove Street. The parade will proceed west on Grove then south on state Route 7 to the Brookfield Township Cemetery. A memorial service will be at the cemetery flagpole after the parade.

Fowler: The annual Memorial Day program will be at 10 a.m. at Fowler Center followed by a parade at 11 a.m. and services on the green by VFW Post 3521. A light lunch will be served after the service at the fire station. The Fowler Township Historical Society museum will be open as well.

Girard: The Girard Veterans Council will sponsor Memorial Day services at the Girard City Cemetery starting at 11 a.m . Pastor Rhonda Gallagher of Trinity Lutheran Church will give the invocation and benediction. Boy Scout Troop 40 will raise the flag and the Girard High School Band will play the Star Spangled Banner. Auxiliary president of Army Navy Garrison 422 will place the wreath, escorted by senior Vice Commander of VFW Post 419, Gene Greathouse. The Gettysburg Address will be read by the valedictorians of the Girard High School 2013 graduating class, Benjamin Cario, Samuel Horne and Gia Mancini. Gina Martini, Heaven Clark, Nicholas Sherock and Jacob Ryser will each give a brief biography on a name on the War Memorial from various wars. Mayor James Melfi will give a few remarks. The Girard Veterans Honor Guard will give a 21 gun salute and Leslie Klock will play “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipe.

Niles: The Niles Fire Department will host a 9:30 a.m. Memorial Day service at their downtown station, 15 E. State St. Refreshments will be provided. For information, contact the fire department at 330-544-9022.

Warren: The W.D. Packard Band and conductor Dr. Stephen L. Gage will host a Memorial Day concert at 3 p.m. today at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW. For information, call 330-841-2619 or go to www.wdpackardband.com.

Columbiana

Leetonia: Parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial at VFW Post 5532 and proceeds to Washingtonville Plaza. Keynote speaker will be Bill Jackson, retired Air Force officer.

Salem: Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association will host Salem’s 149th Memorial Day. The day commences with an 8 a.m. free breakfast hosted by the Memorial and Patriotic Association, feeding all veterans participating in the parade at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. At 9 a.m., a memorial service will be conducted on the Village Green at Lincoln and State streets. Memorial day parade participants will line up at 9:30 a.m. at South Broadway Avenue. The parade will proceed to State Street, Ohio and Franklin Avenues, and Grandview Cemetery. A ceremony with full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery at 11 a.m. with a speech by John R. Sebo, a Salem native, Army veteran and successful businessman.

Mercer

Mercer: At 8:30 a.m. there will be a 5K Race Through the Flags. Register at the post office at 8 a.m. The race awards will be announced at 9 a.m. at the courthouse bandstand. At 9 a.m., a military expo will take place on the north side of the courthouse, and the 2013 honoree recognition will be at the courthouse bandstand. At 9:30, a veterans’ reception will be on the south side of the courthouse. At 10, Brett Allen Morgan will perform at the courthouse bandstand. The parade begins at 11 a.m. The Memorial Day salute will be at noon three blocks south of the courthouse.

Mercer: The Munnell Run Farm Rural Life Museum, 747 Greenville Road, will host a Civil War living-history encampment with the Western Pennsylvania Civil War Reenactors Society from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. Military drill and firing demonstrations will be conducted and Mercer County Historical Society members will display civilian life during the Civil War.
