Healthy gorilla baby born at Columbus Zoo

COLUMBUS (AP) — A gorilla baby has been born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, joining 16 other of the large primates at the zoo.

The healthy boy arrived early Thursday morning, weighing 5 pounds.

He is the first offspring for mother, Kambera, and the zoo says she has displayed a lack of maternal skills.

Currently, animal-care experts at the zoo are raising him in an environment that provides around-the-clock neonatal care. They spend most of the time close to the mother, with the hope of reuniting the pair.

Zoo staff says it’s unknown when visitors will be able to see him.

There have been 31 gorillas born at the Columbus zoo, including the birth of Colo in 1956. The female western lowland gorilla is the oldest gorilla in any zoo.
