Freeze warning in effect for tonight

YOUNGSTOWN — The temperature will drop into the lower 30s overnight with a freeze warning in place from midnight to 9 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The cold weather could play havoc with plants and vegetables, said Eric Barrett, an educator with the Ohio State Extension’s office in Canfield.

To protect annuals, vegetables and newly-planted perennials, Barrett suggests:

• Bringing pots and baskets inside if possible.

• Not using plastic to cover plants as it can transfer cold and possibly freeze plants it touches.

• Using sheets or blankets to cover tender plants, and do so at sunset to hold in heat.

• Using boxes, buckets and baskets are suitable for plant protection.

• Removing the covers during the day to avoid excess heat created by sunlight.

After the cold morning, the temperature is suppose to get into the lower 60s Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland. But there are frost warnings for overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning.
