Fourth-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School celebrated Arbor Day with Canfield Mayor Bill Kay, Canfield Local School Superintendent Alex Geordan and members of the Canfield Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board at the school May 13.
The students and guests gathered in front of the school where an American Elm tree had been planted and dedicated to the fourth-grade class.
Mark Eddy, chairman of the Canfield Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Board and certified arborist, thanked the students for their help in continuing Canfield’s status as a Tree City.
“Thank you for helping Canfield retain its title as a Tree City. This is the city’s 32nd year as a Tree City and we appreciate all your help. It’s not easy to be a Tree City year after year. There are certain things the city must do, and today you have helped us accomplish one of those requirements,” Eddy told the students.
Eddy then turned the ceremony over to Mayor Kay, who read a proclamation which declared May 13 as Tree City Arbor Day. Mayor Kay presented the proclamation to Geordan.
“This is a wonderful tradition. Thank you to the students for taking part and I look forward to this for many years to come,” Geordan said as he accepted the proclamation on behalf of the school district.
The close the ceremony, the students read a poem, class by class, honoring trees.
