Farm donates eggs

For the sixth year, Trillium Farms is helping to fill the tables of local families by donating 3,600 dozen eggs to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley during May, National Egg Month.

Eggs have always been an important staple in the American diet, but it is also one of the hardest food categories to acquire.

With the food bank reporting a 14-percent increase in demand for emergency food assistance, compared to one year ago, this egg donation could not have come at a better time, said Michael Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest.

Seal of approval

Caring Hearts of the Valley, 6550 Seville Drive, Suite A, has received the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with the commission’s national standards for health-care quality and safety in home care.

Caring Hearts of the Valley underwent an unannounced on-site survey in May by a team of Joint Commission surveyors who evaluated Caring Hearts for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.

Donation to center

YOUNGSTOWN

Representatives of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mahoning Valley & Western Pennsylvania donated $2,500 to the Rich Center for Autism at Youngstown State University.

“We’re excited to be a part of a program that gives children a much brighter future, and to offer vital support for this outstanding program that advances Ronald McDonald House Charities’ mission of lifting children to a better tomorrow,” said Herb Washington, RMHC Board President and a McDonald’s Owner/Operator.

The Rich Center said the money will help offset costs of services specifically devoted to its Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention program for its youngest clients.

Doctor joins staff

Doctor Barry H. Brooks has joined the staff of One Health Ohio’s at its Warren West and Lloyd McCoy Community Health Centers in Warren.

An internal medicine physician, Dr. Brooks, a Harvard University Medical School graduate, left his private practice in Cleveland of more than 30 years to join One Health Ohio.

PITTSBURGH

A groundbreaking project underway at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC, in which a woman with quadriplegia took a bite of chocolate using a robot arm she controlled with her thoughts, has been selected to receive one of the Clinical Research Forum’s Annual Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Awards.

The awards recognize research teams that, in 2012, published compelling examples of the scientific innovation that results from the nation’s investment in clinical research that can benefit human health and welfare.
