Ex-Penguin Stanton signs with CFL team

Former Youngstown State defensive tackle Aronde Stanton has signed a free-agent contract with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. He will report to the team later this month. Stanton, a two-year starter for the Penguins, is the first YSU player to be a member of the CFL since wide receiver Kyle Smith was on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ roster.

In 2012 Stanton led the team with 7.5 tackles for losses and was second with four sacks. He had 37 total tackles, including 21 solo stops. He started all 11 games as a junior in 2011 and was credited with 32 total tackles.

Volney Rogers football registration date set

The Volney Rogers Youth Association is gearing up to kick off its 85th football season in Youngstown. Open registration is scheduled June 8 at Arlingtown Heights Recreaction Center on the North Side of Youngstown from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. This registration is for youth between the ages of 6 and 12 who are not already affiliated with a team in the league. Cheerleading registration will also take place at this time.

The Volney Rogers Youth Association has a tradition of producing Division I athletes and NFL players (more than 45 and 10, respectively) with the support of the community. The group’s goal is to teach young men the fundamentals of football, dedication, teamwork and accountability.

Local wrestlers do well at Regional event

Vince Mancini of the Green Machine Wrestling Club went 3-0 to claim a USA Wrestling Central Regional freestyle title in the 88-pound Cadet Division last weekend at Indianapolis. The Central Region is made up of 12 Midwest and Southern states.

Another Green Machine wrestler, Joe Cordova, finished third in the 195-pound Junior Division.

YSU football staff hosts youth camp June 8

The Youngstown State football coaching staff will host a football camp for youth ages 8-13 on June 8 at Stambaugh Stadium. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and and will teach young football players offensive and defensive drills and skills to go along with two 30-minute sessions of “Penguin Ball.”

The cost to attend the camp is $45 and online registration is available at www.penguinsfootballcamps.com. Registration deadline is June 7. No walk-ups will be accepted. Parents should have their children register in the F-7 parking lot just north of Stambaugh Stadium. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Boardman grad helps fitness team advance

Boardman graduate (Class of 2003) Allison Brager, a resident of Atlanta, competed last weekend in the Reebok Crossfit Games Southeast Regional in West Palm Beach, Fla. Her team, CrossFit RX finished third, qualifying them for the “Fittest on Earth” competition July 28-30 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., where they will compete against 48 teams from around the world to be crowned fittest on Earth.

Brager, an all-Ohioan in track and field at Boardman, was a four-year varsity letter winner in track and Brown University, specializing in the field events and hurdles.

Steelers sign 6th-round choice ILB Williams

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed sixth-round draft pick Vince Williams to a four-year contract. Terms were not disclosed. Pittsburgh selected Williams with the 206th overall pick, the team’s second pick of the sixth round.

The 23-year-old Williams recorded 140 tackles with three sacks during his junior and senior seasons at Florida State and was an All-ACC honorable mention selection last fall. He is expected to compete for a backup position behind Lawrence Timmons and Larry Foote.
