YSU baseball team falls to Valparaiso, 3-2

The Youngstown State baseball team grounded into three double plays, including one with the bases loaded to end the game, in a 3-2 loss at Valparaiso on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Penguins (14-41, 8-16 Horizon League) will enter the Horizon tournament as the fifth seed and will play No. 4 Wright State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Valparaiso (29-26, 13-11) will be the third seed in the league tournament.

In addition to grounding into three double plays, the Penguins stranded 13 runners.

Ursuline’s Strollo headed to Walsh

YOUNGSTOWN

Ursuline senior Ryan Strollo will continue his basketball career at Walsh University in North Canton.

Strollo, a third team all-Ohioan, led the Irish to the district final, falling to eventual state semifinalist LaBrae.

The three-year starter averaged 16.7 points per game this season. He is also a standout on Ursuline’s state-ranked baseball team.

Mike Matisi voted Titans’ MVP

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

Lowellville High graduate Mike Matisi was voted the Westminster College tennis team’s Most Valuable Player.

A sophomore, Matisi compiled records of 11-6 overall and 6-2 President’s Athletic Conference in singles.

In doubles, Matisi went 9-8 overall, 4-4 in the conference.

At the conference championships, he earned honorable mention in singles and doubles play.

Matisi has earned two tennis letters and one for basketball.

Prep coaches hired

MINERAL RIDGE

Weathersfield Board of Education has hired these coaches for the 2013-2014 school year.

Assistant football coaches are Andrew Barker, Chris Ault, Todd Smith, Sam Congemi, Andy Apisa, Jared Ebie, Phil Ciaverella, and Mark Van Steenberg.

Seventh- and eighth-grade football coaches are Bob Gessler, Nate Wells, and Tom Noble.

Volunteer football coaches are Ryan Ebie, Bob Kerinik and Nate Mohr.

Konig wins 7th stage, van Garderen in lead

DANVILLE, Calif.

Leopold Konig of the Czech Republic won the seventh cycling stage of the Tour of California in a mountaintop finish Saturday, and American Tejay van Garderen finished third to keep the overall lead for the third straight day.

Koenig, riding for the German team NetApp-Endura team, quickly moved ahead of Janier Acevedo of Colombia with about 400 yards left and completed the 91.4-mile stage from Livermore to Mount Diablo in 3 hours, 54 minutes, 18 seconds.

Bradley keeps lead after 3 Nelson rounds

IRVING, Texas

Keegan Bradley still hasn’t gotten things right on the 18th hole at the Byron Nelson Championship, even when finally going left.

The bogeys on the closing hole at TPC Four Seasons haven’t cost him the lead yet.

Bradley overcame consecutive bogeys early and bogeyed No. 18 for the third round in a row Saturday to finish with a 2-under 68 that kept him in the lead.

Bradley’s 13-under 197 total gave him a one-stroke lead.

Report: Michael Phelps planning comeback

The son of the U.S. national swim team director is reporting that Michael Phelps is planning a comeback for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Peter Busch, whose father Frank oversees the American program, is a news anchor at WBBH, an NBC television affiliate in Fort Myers, Fla.

A brief story from the younger Busch posted on the station’s Web site says Phelps is plotting his return to the pool and hopes to compete at the next Olympics.

Phelps has said his swimming career is over winning 18 gold medals and 22 medals overall, more than any other Olympian.
