Thieves pose as cops, steal from vehicle

WARREN

A 34-year-old Youngstown salesman reported that two males took items from his business vehicle after identifying themselves as police officers while he was in the parking lot of a South Street coin-operated laundry at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The men showed badges and guns, the victim said. They took seven stun guns valued at $210.

The men told the salesmen their names, but police said the names were not known to the Warren Police Department.

Water testing workshop set

Beaver, Pa.

Penn State Extension will have a free “Water Test Result Interpretation” workshop on May 30 at Butler County Community College, Room 202 of the Public Safety Training facility, 107 College Drive.

The program will be presented from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will learn how to understand water test reports, as well as drinking water standards, chain-of-custody, various water test parameters, and comparing test results with standards. Bryan Swistock, extension water resources specialist, and Susan Boser, water resource educator with Penn State Extension, will discuss the management of private water supplies and interpretation of test reports.

Pre-registration is required by May 29 and is limited to 45 participants per session. Register by calling the Beaver County Extension office at 724-774-3003.

Program teaches how to identify wildflowers

MERCER, Pa.

The Mercer County Conservation District will host a program on learning how to identify wildflowers from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Munnell Run Farm, 753 Greenville Road.

The 90-minute, two-part workshop will provide an introductory course on how to identify wildflowers native to western Pennsylvania. The first session will introduce techniques and tools utilized to identify wildflowers with the assistance of the environmental educators; the second session will have the audience apply the teachings and properly identify specific wildflowers. The cost of the program is $5.

Man says he was robbed by friend

WARREN

A Niles man reported that an old friend met him at a house on Iddings Street Southeast at 4:13 p.m. Thursday and robbed him of a 42-inch television set the victim was trying to sell.

The suspect asked the victim to take the television to another address for the money, and the victim came out of the kitchen with a handgun, police said.

The victim and another man ran out of the house, but the suspect fired the gun at them. No one was injured, but the television was still at the suspect’s house.

Vienna trustees meeting planned

VIENNA

Vienna Township trustees will have a special meeting at 7:30 a.m. Monday to discuss the purchase of a backhoe for the road/cemetery department, renovations to the fire and police departments, economic development and to tour the township maintenance department and yard. The trustees meet at the town hall, 848 Youngstown-Kingsville Road.
