Scholarship awards

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio War Orphans Scholarship Program awards tuition assistance to the children of deceased veterans or veterans receiving 60 percent to 100 percent Veterans Affairs service-connected disability compensation who served in the armed forces during a period of declared war.

Combat duties are not required.

Students must be Ohio residents under 25 and be enrolled for full-time, undergraduate study at an eligible Ohio college or university. The application deadline is July 1. For information, call the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission at 330-740-2450.

Women’s symposium

WASHINGTON

Military women from the five service branches are encouraged to register for the Sea Service Leadership Association’s 26th annual Joint Women’s Leadership Symposium, the largest gathering of military women in the nation.

The two-day symposium, which offers opportunities for networking, mentoring, education and leadership development for women of all ranks, is June 6-7 at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center, National Harbor, Md. Attendees may register at www.sealeader.org.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Ian Guthridge recently was promoted to his present rank while serving in South Korea. Guthridge, the son of Mark and Lori Guthridge of Boardman, is a 2008 graduate of Boardman High school.

ACADEMY NEWS

Naval Academy

Ryan Austin Williams, a 2009 graduate of McDonald High School, where he was class valedictorian, is scheduled to graduate Friday from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., with a bachelor of science degree in systems engineering and be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

Williams, the son of Susan Manna of McDonald and Jay Williams of Washington state, and the grandson of Bill and Judy McGuire of Liberty, will be assigned to Quantico, Va., for continued officer training. He will receive his post assignment this summer.

At the academy, Williams was a member of the Navy Varsity Rifle Team for four years, serving as team captain his senior season, and was 2013 All American in Air Rifle (Honorable Mention) and named All Conference for four years. He was a two-time National Collegiate Athletic Association qualifier and two-time Junior Olympian.

While in high school, he participated in track and cross county and the Vienna Cougar Rifle Team, and was named Student Athlete of the Week during his senior year.
