Golf season is well under way, but those who are rusty from the winter layoff will have a chance to shake it off today at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course.

The course will be hosting its annual Tri-State PGA presents Play Golf America Day, featuring both a junior and adult clinic and even a golf show.

“In the past we have had up to 300 people attend, so we are hoping to beat that this year,” said John Kerins, Tam O’Shanter owner and PGA director of golf. “Another great thing about the event is that it’s free.”

Not only is admission free, but so are lessons and lunch. Kerins and other professionals will be there to help out. His PGA staff of Bernie Quinn, Dan McMillen and Jerry Smith — along with Bob Collins and Dennis Dolci — will help with the clinics.

Tri-State PGA Section Executive Director Dennis Darak also will be present.

The first event, the junior clinic, will begin at 10 a.m. with the adult clinic being held at noon.

The 11 a.m. event will feature a special treat, as Dennis Walters and his golf show will be making an appearance.

Walters’ extravaganza is a one-hour event that features not only golf lessons, but also lessons in life.

Nearly 40 years ago Walters was involved in an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Three years later he reinvented himself and has been making stops around the world to teach kids and adults to never let your dreams fade away.

“It’s a privilege to have Dennis come out this year, He’s a great guy and an inspiration to everyone he meets,” Kerins said.

The golf show features Walters demonstrating trick shots, such as hitting balls with clubs made out of fishing rods and even a cell phone.

Behind all of the tricks and skills, Walters’ main message remains the same: Dreams can come true no matter what the circumstance, as long as you work hard.
