May Crowning event honors Mary, mothers

Staff report

Austintown

During May, Catholics honor the Virgin Mary, as all mothers are honored.

Monsignor Kenneth Miller presided at May Crowning, a special prayer service for Mary, at St. Joseph/Immaculate Heart of Mary School last week.

All students, staff and parishioners were invited to celebrate Mary.

Eighth-grade students at SJIHM look forward to May Crowning, as it is their privilege to lead the service in prayer. They write essays about why they want the honor and what qualities they possess to be the Crown Bearer or May Queen.

Patrick Thomas was the Crown Bearer and Brianna Bowell was the May Queen for the service.

Eighth-graders also participate by being readers, candle bearers and members of the May Crowning Court.

Second-graders, dressed in their First Communion outfits, joined the court as they watched Mary being crowned with fresh flowers.
