Former Mahoning deputy responsible for his own death, wife's gunshot injuries

State police say a former Mahoning County deputy sheriff was the shooter in an incident that resulted in his death and serious injuries to his wife.

Police say they spoke to Caroline Lupo, 50, of Mahoning Township in Lawrence County about the May 12 shooting in t couple’s West Main Street home. She told police that after an argument, her husband, Joseph Lupo, 50, shot her three times with a handgun and then shot himself.

An investigation and the examination of physical evidence at the scene corroborates her statements, police said.

She was shot in the leg and stomach, state police say, and is recovering from her injuries.

State police had initially said Lupo died the night of the incident. But that was incorrect. Lupo died early Thursday in St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Because of Lupo’s death, no police prosecution will be sought in the shooting, state police said.

Lupo was a deputy in Mahoning County from 1992 until 2005, spending a majority of his time working courthouse security.
