Union has ‘JA in a Day’

Poland Union Elementary School hosted volunteers and members of Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley May 9 for five special lessons on different topics. Each lesson was tailored to the grade level it was presented to and covered such topics as ourselves, our community, our city, and our region. Gina Chiaro’s kindergarten class covered lessons pertaining to the self.
JA kindergarten classes were designed to show personal and economic lessons through stories and association with characters, as well as hands-on activities. The lessons encouraged students to recognize the role of the self, appreciate individual choices, identify coins and paper money, be responsible with money, work together, discover the importance of saving money and where to save money, identify ways that money can be used to help others, teach the value of work and appreciate giving as well as receiving.
“Each grade builds on one another,” said Melissa D’Apolito of Junion Achievement of Mahoning Valley. “What they learn here, these students will be using for the rest of their lives and will factor in to all future lessons with JA. All the lessons are given by parent and community volunteers.”
JA offers these programs free of charge to local schools and through these lessons, aims to teach children important life lessons and about the kind of work that JA does in the community, such as working hard and giving back.
