Toddlers learned all about the difference between clean and dirty at a story time in the Poland library April 25. The story time, led by librarian Annette Ahrens, discussed the topics of having fun while getting dirty and that getting clean can be fun, too.
“We always should keep our literacy goals in mind,” said Ahrens. “This week, we want to focus on finding a book that your child likes and is really interested in. Keep reading your child stories and keep them interested in the story.”
The first book read at the story time was “Rabbit Ears” by Amber Stewart, which was about a young rabbit that does not like to get his ears cleaned. When his older cousin comes to stay the night, the rabbit sees that big rabbits clean their own ears and, in an effort to prove to his parents that he is old enough to stay the night at his cousin’s house, he begins to wash his own ears. Other stories included “Rhyming Dust Bunnies” by Jan Thomas, “I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More!” by Karen Beaumont, “I’m Dirty!” by Kate McMullan and “Bubbles, Bubbles” by Kathi Appelt.
Children also participated in several songs and rhymes about staying clean. “I’m a Cleaning Machine,” “This Is the Way We Wash Our Hands,” and “There Are Bubbles in the Air,” in which Ahrens blew bubbles for the children to dance in while parents sang, were a few of the songs at the story time.
The story time ended with a craft of making a bubble bath sheet to remind children that staying clean can be just as fun as getting dirty.
