SJIHM students compete in State Science Day

St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary students competed in the school-wide Experimental Design Science Fair in early February.

Qualifying students take suggestions from the judges and improve their science experiment in order compete in the Lake-to-River Science Day at Youngstown State University in March.

Students scoring high enough in their particular category of science became eligible to compete at the State Science Day at Ohio State University on May 11.

YSU sponsors a seminar for qualifying students to help them improve their science design, experiment and presentation.

“I was nervous to be judged at State, but the experience helped me for the future when I have to interview for college and jobs,” said Nora Carlson, an eighth-grade student. “State Science Day was a good experience. I saw a lot of different science projects.”

Sixth graders Thomas Leskovac and Dylan Miskell were awarded superior ratings, while Jarod Day, Kathleen Faloon and Abby Walsh earned excellent ratings.

Eighth-grade students Nora Carlson, Joseph Chepke, Maria Santana and Patrick Thomas earned superior ratings and Carly Koewacich earned an excellent rating.

“Science fair projects allow students to explore an area of science in which they are interested,” said Sharon Nicastro, a science teacher at SJIHM. “This independent study prepares students for their future and can encourage students to pursue careers in science.”
