Former deputy dies

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office has confirmed that former county sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Lupo died overnight Wednesday.

Lupo, 50, was being treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a gunshot wound to the head after being wounded in a shooting at his Mahoning Township, Pa., home about 11:20 p.m. Sunday.

His wife, Caroline, was wounded in the leg and stomach and is being treated at St. Elizabeth.

Earlier this week, Pennsylvania State Police at New Castle said Lupo was dead, but they corrected it Tuesday. They said they were given the wrong information.

Salineville road closes

Salineville

State Route 39 will be closed to traffic at 9 a.m. Wednesday for railroad crossing repairs.

Beginning at state routes 39 and 644, traffic will be detoured north on route 644 to route 518, then east on route 518 to route 164 south back to route 39, and reverse.

Norfolk and Southern Railroad will be performing the repairs. Work is expected to be completed in two days.

Grant for fire hoses

BAZETTA

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Department of Homeland Security have awarded the Bazetta Township Fire Department a grant of $8,172 to allow the department to replace 34 sections of firefighting hose and three hose nozzles.

The Assistance to Firefighters grant, will also pay for replacement of an 18-year-old multigas detector, a device firefighters take to fire scenes to determine the types of gases that might be present.

These roads will be closed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for the March for Babies Walk:

Fifth Avenue northbound lane closure from Armed Forces Boulevard to Eastbound Service Road; Eastbound Service Road from Fifth to Wick avenues; Wick Avenue southbound lane closure from Eastbound Service Road to Commerce Street; Commerce Street westbound lane closure from Wick Avenue to North Hazel Street.

Battle of bands set

Belmont Pines Hospital teen suicide prevention group, The Jason Foundation, will host “Jammin4JasonII” from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the former South Range High School building, 11836 South Ave.

The event will include a battle of the bands with local teen artists performing for cash prizes. Cost is $2 for students and $5 for adults. Event T-shirts and food will be available.
