Neighbors | Natalie Scott.The Butler Art Museum partnered with Dobbins Elementary School to offer the Night at the Butler event, an evening in which fourth-grade students acted at docents, April 30.
Fourth-grade students at Dobbins Elementary School attended the Night at the Butler event April 30 at Butler Art Museum. The museum displayed artwork and journals completed by the students throughout their year of studying collections of artwork from four famous American artists - Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, Jacob Lawrence and Norman Rockwell.
“It took me two weeks to make my picture,” said Halle Sebast, a student at Dobbins Elementary School. “My inspiration came from one of the artists we studied and by studying owls.”
The student artwork had to be completed in a style similar to the ones used by one of the artists studied throughout the year.
“We didn’t just study their art,” said Riley-Jo Norris. “We learned how many of the artists lived and all about their lives. My favorite artist is Norman Rockwell. He painted the covers for ‘The Saturday Evening Post.’”
This was the first year that Dobbins participated in this event. They partnered with the Butler Art Museum docents to turn fourth-grade students into art experts and docents for an evening.
“The Dobbins evening at the Butler was the first of it’s kind. We have been partnering with the Butler for the past two years to make this event happen,” said Dobbins principal Cheryl Borovitcky. “I really see the importance of art in education and I feel so grateful that the Butler is supporting our education of the arts with this program. It was such a beautiful night to see Dobbins students being docents to the Butler and I really want to thank Carole O’Brien and all of the Butler docents for their partnership in this endeavor.”
