Warren man charged with throwing gasoline on mail carrier

Talib “Sidney” Jordan, 55, of 1717 Hamilton St. SW and 295 W. Market St., is being held in the Trumbull County Jail on $250,000 bond after police say he attempted to douse a U.S. Postal carrier with gasoline at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The carrier said he was attempting to deliver mail in the 1400 block of Hamilton when Jordan expressed his anger toward him regarding the U.S. Postal Service and attempted to assault him with gasoline.

The carrier is a 48-year-old man from Youngstown.

Freddie Washington, 34, of Union Street Southwest called 911 for the carrier after witnessing the assault, police said.

Washington told The Vindicator he was visiting a friend on Hamilton when he noticed a man “pacing back and forth” near the mail carrier’s truck and then saw the mail carrier walk up and tell the other man, “All I do is deliver the mail. It’s not my fault.”

But the suspect said to the carrier, “You know what this is? You’re going to wear all of this,” and then he tried to throw a large full bucket of gasoline on the mail carrier.

The mail carrier dodged most of the gasoline by running in circles, but some got on his back, Washington said.

Judge Terry Ivanchak of Warren Municipal Court entered an innocent plea for Jordan to felonious assault Wednesday. He returns to court at 10:15 a.m. May 23.

If convicted, Jordan could get eight years in prison.
